How do I begin?
Think about what you want to accomplish and decide on an action plan for
achieving your goal. You should write your goal and your action plan and put
it somewhere that you will see it often. Review your goal and action plan
to get there often and try to decide if you are working toward this goal to
the best of your ability. Keep working toward your goal and you will feel
better about yourself and your confidence level will go up! Have a positive
attitude!!
Relax, school is hard work but it can also be fun.
Know what each teacher expects of you. Teachers appreciate positive
attitudes
and so do your classmates. It's contageous!
Organization is Key!
Get yourself organized! Use your agenda book and a calendar at home to write
your homework, test dates, quiz dates, after school activities, and any other
important information. Review the calendar dates so that you are prepared
for all your responsibilities and activities.
One of the best ways to organize your materials is your three ring binder
with dividers for each class, your zipper bag for your pens, pencils, and
other school tools. Once a week, check to make sure you have extra binder
paper, and plenty of pens and pencils in case you need them in a hurry.
Every day, check to make sure that all the papers are in the right dividers.
You should be able to get to them easily and quickly. Have folders, a box,
a draw, or other place where you keep completed work at home. Keep this by
your study place so you can refer to information needed to review for tests
and reports.
Where should I study and how could I manage my time?
Create a study place where you can spend time on your homework, writing,
studying, and most of all, planning and working on your action plan to meet
your goals.
Have all the materials you will need handy to do a great job. If you have to
go searching for those colored pencils or the thin line black marker when you
want them, you can easily be distracted.
Keep track of your time spent working. Is there a way you can improve the
time you spent studying and working? Think about all those breaks for
snacks, the telephone, the tv, and any other distraction. How can you improve
your time management? Breaks are OK, but remember your goal and stick to
it. One of the ways you can use: do the hard stuff first, then the rest
will be easy.
Break longer assignments or test study into smaller segments and spend some
time each day on them rather than leave it all to the night before the report
is due or the test is given. Decide how long you will need and the number of
days you have and come up with a plan to manage your time.
Should I have a study buddy?
Have a study buddy that you can rely on for work when you are absent, or
pulled out of class. A study buddy can be great for test preparation and
just homework help. Try to choose someone from your classes who is seriously
interested in studying and has similar goals as you. Exchange phone numbers
and/or email addresses for the buzz about what happened in class- the
homework, and upcoming reports, tests, or important announcements.
Is class participation important?
Teachers appreciate students who are enthusiastic about school and have a
positive attitude. One of the ways you can participate and get involved in
class activities is to pay attention and listen. Ask the teacher for help if
you are having difficulty. Be honest and truthful with your teachers. They
can help you with your concerns and questions.
