Mrs. Rohmann's Class News October 26, 2009
Happy Fall! I hope everyone had a great weekend and enjoyed
Sunday's sunshine! This week’s newsletter will fill you in on what
we are working on in class.
Friday, October 30th, will be our Fall Party! If you have not yet
turned in your blue form regarding classroom parties, please try to
turn it in as soon as you can. A big THANK YOU to Mrs. S. for being
our Homeroom Coordinator! Also, thank you so much to everyone for
making contributions, sending in party favors, and volunteering your
time to help out with our parties!
In Writer's Workshop, we just finished up our imaginary pet pieces.
Each student chose a picture of a puppy and wrote a descriptive
story. As we worked on our stories, we used the writing process to
pre-write, draft, revise, edit, and publish. The stories came out
great and are hanging in the hallway for everyone to admire. I am so
proud of our second graders!
In Math, addition and subtraction strategies have been our primary
focus. We are playing a variety of math games and are also using
math manipulatives to help reinforce the concepts we are learning.
Last week, we worked on solving subtraction word problems. Students
have been counting back, counting up, and using related addition
facts to solve subtraction problems.
In Reading, we have been learning about the phases of the moon.
While reading with our whole group, students have been recording
important things they notice and questions they are wondering. Each
child has a special reading journal to record his or her thinking
during reading. This week, we are starting the story, Midnight on
the Moon. This is a Magic Tree House chapter book. Each day, we
will read one to two chapters in class. Please read the same
chapters for homework with your child. We will be sure to write the
homework chapters down in our agenda books. Feel free to read the
chapters to your child or let your child read to you.
In Science, we have been investigating air through a variety of
hands-on activities. Students have observed how air is captured, how
air can be compressed, and how air under pressure can move things
around. In our next investigation, students will observe daily
weather and record their observations. We will use different weather
instruments to collect data and learn more about the job of a
meteorologist.
In Social Studies, we are finishing up our study on Family Ties. In
this unit, we discussed family traditions and relatives, types of
communities, and how transportation has changed over time. We are
about to begin Unit 5- Discovering our Past. In this unit, the
children will learn about our country’s history. We will learn about
Native Americans, colonists, explorers, and pioneers.
Fall Conferences: If for any reason, you are unsure of your
conference date/time in November. Please jot me a note and I will
gladly send home the information. Thank you!
Keep up the Great Work!
