Hello Friends! I am so excited to be teaching second grade at Port Colden
Elementary. This is my second year to teach in NJ, but my ninth year teaching
second grade. I moved to Pennsylvania in August 2008 from Houston, Texas. It
was a BIG move for me because Texas had been my home for so very long.
Luckily, I have adjusted very well to life in the Northeast! I have met many
new friends and gained lots of new experiences. I love, love, love dogs! My
students always get to hear stories about my mini-goldendoodle, Lizzie! She
is a handful at times, but I love her! My favorite things to do, outside of
school, are: reading, cooking, tennis, ping pong, and traveling. Teaching is
my true passion! It is what I always dreamed of doing when I was little, and
I feel very privileged to be living my dream!
In our classroom, I have developed a safe and inviting environment. Through a
library-like classroom atmosphere, students are empowered to make choices.
Learning is differentiated and individualized; I strive to meet the varying
needs and levels of each student. I rely on concept-based instruction to
nurture critical thinking skills and understanding. It is through these
authentic learning experiences that students are able to make important
real-world connections to achieve subject mastery. I am teaching my students
to be successful not only, academically, but also affectively. In order to
reach my students and ensure that academic learning is occurring, I have to
gain their respect and trust and engage them fully, before expecting the
academic learning to happen.
