  10-26 class review of sections #1 & #2 of chapter #2
section #1 = stories of the origins
The first 11 chapters of Genesis portray the
one God bringing forth goodness out of chaos
and creating humankind in God's own image.
Catholics believe the Creation story does not
                      contradict the theory of evolution.
Genesis also describes how sin entered the
world thru Adam and Eve's attempt to be equal
to God. The stories of Cain and Abel,Noah and
the Flood, and the Tower of Babel illustrate
how sin continued to spread. God extended the
first covenant to Noah because he obeyed God's
                      Word.
section #2 = Abraham: the Father of biblical faith
God calls Abraham to leave everytrhing behind
and go to an unknown land, where his many des-
cendants would become a great nation.Responding
obediently, Abraham becomes the father of
biblical faith for Jews, Christians, & Muslims.

TEST ---- Chapter 4: The Law: Living Out the Covenant--------

The whole collection of laws from Exodus thru Deuteronomy, known as the
Law of Moses, spells out more precisely how Israel is th keep the
Covenant. The Book of Leviticus provides instructions for Israel's
worship. Besides regulations for rituals, Leviticus, in its' Holiness
Code, teaches how to live out the holiness of worship in just and
      compassionate relationships.
The Book of Numbers consists of priestly regulations, a census report,
and more tales of Israel's wilderness wanderings.
Deuteronomy repeats the story of Israel's liberation and Covenant with
God by way of 3 sermons attributed to Moses, addressed to the Israelites
at the brink of the Promised Land.

----- begin Chapter 5: The Land: Finding Hope....... in God's Gift
            A. Making Sense of the Past
During ther babylonian Exile, the Deuteronomists composed a
history of the Israelites from the time they entered the
Promised Land. This history served as a self-examination
for the Israelites, which helped them turn the despair of
the exile into a time to build new hope for the future in
                their homeland.
            B. Joshua: Sweeping into the Promised Land
The Book of Joshua offers miraculous accounts of Joshua and
the Israelites entering the Promised Land and settling there
These accounts show that the Israelites' taking of the land
was a gift from God, not something they achieved on their
own. Joshua represents everytrhing Israel was supposed to
be ----- completely faithful to God. The overriding message
of the accounts of the Jericho conquest and other battles is
that victory comes when people place their trust entirely in
God. Joshua divides the land among the twelve tribes of
                Israel.
