Making Sense of the Past During ther babylonian Exile, the Deuteronomists composed a history of the Israelites from the time they entered the Promised Land. This history served as a self-examination for the Israelites, which helped them turn the despair of the exile into a time to build new hope for the future in their homeland. B. Joshua: Sweeping into the Promised Land The Book of Joshua offers miraculous accounts of Joshua and the Israelites entering the Promised Land and settling there These accounts show that the Israelites' taking of the land was a gift from God, not something they achieved on their own.
