General Music, Grade 7:
The purpose of this class is to study the music of world cultures. It
correlates with the Social Studies Curriculum in Grade 7. The class is
designed to teach students empathy for other people of the world, to
understand how music is used in other cultures, and what influences world
music has on the music we listen to in the United States!
General Music, Grade 8:
The purpose of this class is to learn about the music of the United States:
Jazz, Blues, Patriotic, Spirituals and Gospels, Country, and Rock and Roll.
We learn how slave spirituals influenced all other music right up to the
music we listen to today! Students create business cards for American
musicians we've studied or they are interested in... Past cards have
included Elvis Presely, Little Richard, Patti LaBelle, Diana Ross, Bruce
Springsteen, and many others!
Chorus:
Students learn standard choral literature and develop their singing voices.
They will be prepared for the choir experience in high school. The students
will be learning how to READ music as well as develop singing ability.
In alternate years the chorus travels to New York City to see a Broadway
show/another performance (i.e. Philadelphia Phillies game).
