May News
NJ ASK testing - week of May 7th through May 11th. Please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep every night, eats a healthy breakfast each morning- protein is great for the brain!, and comes to school on time. Try to give your child a different phrase of encouragement as they leave for school each day- for example: We believe in you! You are a great student! You can do it! Try your best, that is what matters!, etc. I realize it is allergy season, so I have kept the windows closed as much as I can and will continue to next week so none of us have an "allergy attack", myself included :) . I will be allowing students to keep a few tissues in their desk, as once testing begins, they will not be allowed out of their seats, with the exception of emergencies and/or breaks.
We have been working very diligently on all types of strategies which will help make your child feel comfortable during the testing. I am extremely proud of how hard everyone has been working and have every bit of confidence that they will do their best.
LAL:
After testing, we will continue with our non-fiction studies. We will also be moving into our final class novel,
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
, where we will continue with extended response questions using RACE, learning how to write a persuasive essay, along with many other fun and exciting activities that will utilize our imagination! We will continue with book clubs and guided reading, and will become involved with more discussions and sharing of what we read.
In writing, we will be learing how to write a persuasive essay, convincing others to purchase a newly invented candy! The students will also explore a career they think they may want to have one day and write an expository essay on that chosen career. Information to research career will be sent home sometime this month.
Math:
We will pick up with unit 11 with a focus on 3d shapes, volume and capacity.
Social Studies:
We have quickly moved through all the new changes and growth New Jersey experienced early on. We will be moving into the 21st century with a focus on government and the economy of New Jersey.
Science:
Check out Ms. Lucci's site to see what is happening in the world of science!
