What has been going on in second grade? In reading, your child has been utilizing strategies and skills to help them understand the stories and the characters involved better. We have been continuing to make inferences/draw conclusions during independent reading through the use of sticky notes. The use of sticky notes is a great way for you to monitor your child's reading. Your children can summarize, react, predict or comment on what they have been reading. This gives you a "sneak peak" as to what your child is thinking and understanding about a story that they have read independently. We have been utilizing this strategy at school and therefore your children should be familiar with how to use sticky notes at home when reading. A good rule of thumb is to have your child write a sticky note every 3-5 pages to ensure that they are thinking about their reading.Your children have just begun writing letters to me about the books they have been reading independently. They have been using their sticky notes to write these letters. I will be writing back and forth with them, commenting on what they have written and answering questions they might have about what they are reading.
