Welcome to 3-2's Math Center!
This week we will be working on Lesson 3-Subtraction
Here are some definitions to study:
Difference-the answer in a subtraction problem.
Fact families- a group of related facts using the same numbers.
Example- 6, 7, 13
6+7=13
13-7=6
related facts-basic facts using the same numbers.
regroup-to name a number in a different way. For example if you had 74-66 you
would need to regroup since you can not take 6 away from 4.
estimate-to find an answer that is close to the answer.
Example- 265 would estimate to 300
413 would estimate to 400
We use our knowledge about rounding and place value to help us decide what
our number would estimate to.
Remember...find your number, go next door
5 or more raise the score!
4 or less, just ignore!
and all the numbers to the right
roll to zero in a fright!!
**Regrouping usually is the most difficult for students. Any additional
practice with regrouping would be extremely beneficial. Many times, students
remember to borrow, however they forget to cross out the previous number and
put one less after borrowing. The best way to fix this common error is
practice, practice, practice :)
*Subtraction can be found everywhere! Please look for opportunities at home
to practice addition. For example, during dinner you can use the number of
people in your family as a subtraction problem. "We have 5 people in all, and
2 are done eating...how many are still eating? Another example could be-we
had 8 pieces of cake and only 4 are left..how many pieces were eaten? The
more practice your child gets with subtraction, the easier they will be able
to apply it in class! :)
