Can I send in birthday treats to school for my child's birthday?

Due to district policy, no food items are allowed to be sent in for birthday
celebrations. Pencils, erasers, gluesticks, notepads, etc. are good
substitutes.

Do all second grade teachers teach the same thing?

All second grade teachers are required to follow the same cirriculum, but
each teacher has her own teaching style and system of grading. We all get
the job done in our own way.

My child speaks another language at home. What can I do to help him?

WOW!!! Your child is fortunate to be able to speak more than one language.
Children write the way that they speak, and if they aren't speaking proper
english, they will have a hard time writing and reading it. Try hard to
encourage your child to speak English at home, until they have mastered the
basic skils that they need in order to succeed in class.

My child knows the answers at home, but isn't doing well on tests.

Some children suffer from test anxiety. Make sure you encourage your child
simply to do his/her best, and that you will be happy with the results. As
always, the right amount of sleep and a good breakfast in the morning are
necessary for a successful day at school also.

How can I help my child with reading comprehension?

I always suggest that when your child reads at home, be sure to ask
questions about what was read. This can also be combined with a writing
activity. Write your child a letter asking what they read today. This will
force them to write a response that is a summary of what they read.
You can also go to Lakeshore Learning on Rt. 18 south in East Brunswick.
This "teacher store" will have test prep workbooks that will help your child
with "cold reads", or stories that were never read in class.
