At the beginning of class 1. Sit quickly and quietly. 2. Place homework (if any) out on your desk. 3. Copy new homework from homework board (in the front of the class). 4. Begin to work! (The assignment is on the TV monitor or the chalkboard.) The first 5 minutes of class is the time to sharpen pencils and use the restroom. After five minutes, you should be ready to actively learn. The words “may” and “please” are required in all requests. For example: ”May I please use the bathroom?” or “May I please go to the nurse?” Homework review 1. We will review homework the day after it is assigned. 2. If you do not have your homework, a zero will go into my grade book. 3. You will be expected to leave the room to complete the homework you did not do (Maximum time away from room: 10 minutes). 4. You will fill out a pink slip explaining why the homework wasn’t completed. 5. At mid term and at the end of the quarter, all assignments will be averaged together and calculated into the marking period grade (counting for ten percent of your average). At the end of class 1. Clean up work area (return supplies, check floor for papers, etc.) 2. Stand quietly at desk (chair in please). 3. Dismissal will be by table. When a guest enters the room 1. You should continue to work ignoring the guest unless given other directions. Travel in the building 1. Quietly line up single file by line order (alphabetical). (For homeroom dismissal, we will line up in bus order starting with Bus 22.) 2. Walk quickly and silently. 3. The last student out will be requested to turn out the lights and shut the door behind him/herself. 4. Follow teacher’s instructions. 5. Stay on the colored tiles and stop at every arch and corner. Passing papers 1. All papers will be passed from the left to the right of the room unless otherwise directed. 2. That person passes to the person in charge of putting the papers in order, making sure they are all facing the same direction. 3. Papers will be placed in the black wire in box on my desk for grading. Paper Heading First and Last Name (No name = no grade). Your name must be on your work for you to receive credit. Date Student Number (I will give you this and ask you add it to your paper. It helps me in recording the grades.) Please use pencil or blue or black ink for all written work. Other ink colors are difficult for me to read and will result in a point deduction. You may always type your work but this is never required. When you are absent 1. Check the absentee folder for missed work or handouts before class. 2. Check homework log for missed work. If you are absent during a graded in- class assignment, you will be excused. Your grade for that missed assignment will be EXC in the grade book and will not be calculated into your grade. 3. Missed quizzes and tests must be scheduled with the teacher. You are responsible for scheduling them. If you do not come to me to schedule it within an acceptable amount of days, I will give you a zero in the grade book. 4. Work must be made up equal to the days absent. (An example, if you are absent 1 day, then you have 1 day to make up the work.) 5. Work not made up will show as ABS in the grade book and will count as a 0. **A special note for chorus/lessons/band//TAG: Please come to class prior to leaving for chorus, music or TAG. I need your homework as well as an opportunity to let you know of any special situations in class for the day. You are responsible for completing any missed work and obtaining the notes/homework from your classmates. Submitting assignments (Early work or Absences) 1. If you are absent or are submitting a contract or packet for early grading, please place all work in the black wire inbox on the corner of my desk. Please do this at the beginning or end of class. Mail Delivery 1. When the mailbox icon is on the TV monitor, the designated Passer will deliver the mail during the first five minutes of class. If the current Passer is absent, the Substitute will perform this job. 2. The Passer will take the mail from the class folder by the window and deliver the colored mail folders to each person. The color of the mail folders matches the class color (Red/orange, green, and yellow). 3. Students will quickly take mail from their folder, close the folder, and pass their folder with the student number tabs going in the same direction to the front of the room. (If a student is absent, the mail should be left in the folder.) 5. Once the students have their mail, they will record their grades on their grade sheets (to be signed or initialed by a parent) and put all papers away. 4. The teacher will either collect the mail folders or ask a student for assistance. Pink Slips 1. If a student is missing a homework assignment, he/she will complete a Pink Slip in class. 2. The student will fill in name, date, period, student number, missed assignment, and reason. 3. Please sign the bottom of the form. 4. Place the form in the black wire inbox on the corner of my desk before the end of class. Missed graded assignments will be calculated as a zero. All missed homework is averaged into the grade and counts as 10 percent of the final grade. 5. Pink slips will be used to determine eligibility for classroom reward activities (i.e., special days & activities, assemblies). With Each Story: Vocabulary: Each story comes with a new set of vocabulary words. Students are responsible to show knowledge of their meanings by using them in sentences. Students will also complete the appropriate Practice Book Page. Spelling With each story, students will get a new set of spelling words. There will be a pretest for each new list. If a student receives a 100 on the pretest, students do not need to take the post test. A score of 90 or better allows students the choice (to take or not to take the post test. I count whichever grade is higher (that of the pretest or the post test). If a student is lucky enough to achieve these grades, he/she is still expected to complete the work involved with the spelling words. Contracts (100 points each): Students are expected to complete the 100 point contract with activities of their choosing that total 100 points. Attached is a copy of the contract. Spelling Packets (100 points): Students will also be responsible for completing a packet that involves the current spelling words. All sections must be completed unless I say otherwise. Tests: There will be at least three assessments with each story. With every story, there will be a vocabulary test, a spelling test and a story test. There will occasionally be graded in-class and take home assignments, as well as unannounced quizzes. Acceptance of late work Please note: The following does not apply to absences. Please see “When you are absent” for these cases. Students are expected to have all work available at the start of class. They will not be able to return to backpacks or classrooms to collect missing work. Some work will be accepted after class and up to one day after the due date. There will be a 2 point deduction for all late work. Assignment type late policy Ungraded daily homework may not be turned in late. These will only be accepted during class time. Graded homework, contracts, and projects: These will be accepted the same day and up to 1 day after the due date. There will be a 5 pt deduction for lateness. After the late day, they will not be accepted. They will be marked as NHI (Not Handed In) in the gradebook. NHI is counted as a zero toward the quarter grade. Extra Credit When work is, in my opinion, exceptional, and the extra effort you put into your work shows, I will, on occasion reward such work with extra credit points. **I do not assign extra credit to help bring up grades. You earn the grade you get, and if you choose not to do the work the first time, I will not reward that action with bonus points. Classroom Library: The classroom library in the back of the room is for your reading enjoyment. I purchased almost all of those books with money out of my own pocket. I expect you to treat them with the respect they deserve. I expect the following guidelines to be adhered to: 1. Only one book at a time may be borrowed from the classroom library. 2. If you wish to take one of the books home, the cards in the back of the books are for you to sign them out. You MUST write your first name, last name and the date you borrowed the book on this card. The card then gets placed in the pocket that corresponds with the date you signed the book out. 3. You may only keep the book for two weeks. With the teacher’s permission, you may keep the book longer, for a period agreed upon by both of us. 4. To return a book: remove the card from the pocket, return it to the back of the book and return the book to the library shelf. 5. Unless stated otherwise, you may check out any book from the library. 6. You are expected to treat my classroom library books with the same respect which you show the media center books and your textbooks. 7. If you lose one of my books, you must either replace the book with the same title or one of equal value or pay for the book so that I may replace it. 8. If you damage the book, you are responsible for repairing it. If the book is deemed irreparable, you are responsible for replacing it. 9. Borrowing books from my library is a privilege. If you choose not to follow the guidelines or lose or damage my books, you will lose the privilege. 10. You are responsible for maintaining the library. The Book Worm is the person who checks it at the end of the day to be sure it is neat, but you can help him/her out by returning books to their proper places, and not leaving them lying around or making the area a mess. 11. Before you are permitted to borrow books, you must pass a quiz (receive a 100) based on these guidelines. You may take the quiz as many times as needed to pass it, but you will not be permitted to borrow books until it is passed. 12. The quiz will be signed by me, you and your parents to show that everyone is aware of and understands these guidelines.
