FAQ
Where can I find the Code of Conduct? I'm so glad you asked! This Code is very important because it explains very clearly what is expected of our students at the Upper Elementary School. It is printed on the back of the UES folder given to your child on the first day of school, on page 4 of their assignment pads and it is posted in every classroom. Please contact me if you have any questions. What is the biggest adjustment children have to make at the UES? It's different for everybody, but I'd say the biggest adjustment is with developing organization skills. Since the students have 9 periods and change several times a day, they will need to become accustomed to getting ready for their next class quickly and making sure they have what they need with them. How can I help my child get better organizational skills? Go through their backpacks with your child nightly. Make sure to take out anything that is not needed and to sign any papers that the teachers have sent home. Also, go over their homework with them to make sure all is done as requested. If a student gets into the habit of preparing at home first, it will fall into place at school. Your child can either bring lunch from home or buy. Shortly after school starts, he or she will receive a scan card for purchasing lunch. The cashier in the cafeteria will scan their card when buying, and the computer will automatically debit the amount of their lunch from their pre-paid balance. How do we pre-pay for lunch? How about sending other $$ into school? You will find it necessary to send money into your child's teacher for various reasons, including lunch, insurance, school fundraisers, etc. Please send in the exact amount in a sealed envelope properly marked with the child's name, teacher, room number and school. What are the school hours for regular days, early dismissal, etc.? Regular hours are from 8:45 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Early Dismissal days are from 8:45 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. Delayed Opening days are from 10:15 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (morning buses will pick up 90 minutes later than regular) Check out page 10 of the assignment pad for detailed information. How do I find out about any Emergency Closings/Delayed Openings? If you think weather, road conditions or other emergencies may necessitate an Emergency Closing, Early Dismissal or Delayed Opening, please do one of the following: * Listen to radio stations WCTC 1450 AM, WMGQ 98.3 FM or New Jersey 101.5 FM * Check out our district website at www.sayrevillek12.net, which is absolutely wonderful in posting information such as this promptly. * Check in assignment pad, page 10 for this info. * Please do not call the school or district switchboard operator so that phone lines may be kept open for emergency calls. * If you carry around a pocket calendar/organizer, etc., I suggest you write down the information on the radio stations and website so that you will always have them handy if there is a question in your mind as to whether the school may close. If not, jot it down on a paper and keep it in your wallet. Keeping the information in a place that's always handy is very important. * Also a very important point for the safety for your child: Children should be instructed prior to an emergency or school closing where to go and what to do in the event someone is not at home. This is particularly true for working parents. Just as we at school practice and instruct on emergencies such as fire drills/emergency situations, you should do the same with your child for home. As a parent, it's something I do routinely because although I always plan our schedules carefully, I understand an emergency or weather conditions may alter my plans and leave my child coming home to an empty house; having a plan for this is critical. What are the key things to know about my child being absent? Please call the school at 732-316-4058 and let us know your child will be absent as soon as you know. After attendance is taken, we will call those parents who have not reported their child absent so it saves all of us a lot if we communicate on this issue. A child absent must present a written excuse, stating the reason for absense and signed by the parent/guardian. Your child will have to make up for all classwork and homework; please make sure they talk to all teachers about this. What do I do if I need to take my child out of school early? You are required to send a written note requesting that your child be excused, telling us the time you will report to the school to pick up your child. The parent or guardian must come to the school office, present acceptable I.D. and sign out the child. If something comes up during the course of the school day, please call the school office at 732-316-4050 to find out what you will be required to do to sign your child out early. May my child take a different bus home if I send in a note? No. Your child may only take the bus assigned to him or her. There are no exceptions. This rule is firm and is for the safety of all children. Check out pages 5-6 in student assignment pad. This Code is strictly followed so make sure you and your child are familiar with it.
