Mrs. Mahieu's Current TopicsScience: Next Quiz: Monday, November 30, 2009 Topics: Newton's First Law of Motion: Inertia (A body in motion tends to stay in motion and a body at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force.) Remember to study chapter 12, lesson 1 (PAGE F2 in text book) Newton Poster is due THIS TUESDAY, December 2, 2009. As discussed on explanation sheet, you must illustrate his First Law of Motion in two different ways, including a caption describing what is happening in the picture. Each caption must include 2 vocabulary terms correctly.
**Native American Project will be assigned next week. (HAND-OUT will be distributed) Students will choose from a diarama, a craft, or an authentic recipe made by one of the 4 tribes we studied.Look for more details next week.
Math: Next Quiz: Friday, December 4, 2009 Topic: Writing equivalent fractions. Finding common factors and the GCF or GREATEST COMMON FACTOR. Chapter 5, study first few lessons. This includes FACTOR TREES, FINDING THE PRIME FACORIZATION.
Chapter 4 in text Remember, Line Graphs are used to show a change in data over time. An interval is the distance between numbers on the vertical axis. A break in the interval is that little zigzaggy line that allows you to leave off a chunk of numbers and start at, say 50 or 60, etc.
Mean is the average. Add all of the numbers and divide by the amount of numbers in the set. Median is the MIDDLE number when the numbers are ARRANGED in numeric order. Mode is the number that occurs the MOST often. You may have more than one mode or no mode at all. Range is the GREATEST number minus the LEAST.
Remember the division shortcut for dividing decimals by 10, 100, or 1,000 (etc.) To divide by 10, simply move the decimal one place to the left. 5.4 ÷ 10 = 0.54 To divide by 100, move the decimal two places to the left. 6.54 ÷ 100 = 0.0654 (a zero had to be added at the beginning)
•Divisibility Rules for 2,3,4,5,6,9, and 10: (can be found on page 200 in text) 2 rule: All even numbers are divisible by 2. 3 rule: The sum of the digits of the number must be a multiple of 3. 2,421 = 2+4+2+1=9 which is a multiple of 3. 2,421 is divisible by 3. 4 rule: The last two digits of the number are a multiple of 4 OR the number ends in two or more zeros. 5 rule: The number ends in a 5 or a 0. 6 rule: (COMBO RULE) The number is even and divisible by 3. 9 rule: The sum of the digits is a multiple of 9, such as 9, 18, 27, etc. 10 rule: The number ends in one or more zeros.
Remember the steps for long division: Does (Divide) McDonalds (Multiply) Sell (Subtract) Cheese (Compare difference to divisor- if the difference is larger, to back and increase the digit in the quotient by one) Burgers (Bring down) Sunday (Start over!)
Study Island Assignments: Students should currently have at least 8 Blue Ribbons in Math
Students should visit MHSchool.com for extra help in both Math and Science (McGraw-Hill Website)
