Outside Reading

Bring an outside reading book to class EVERY day. You will receive
participation credit for having your book with you.

You may chose any book you like, but it must be approved by the teacher.

The first five minutes of class will be devoted to each student reading
his/her outside reading book.

Students may not leave their outside reading book in the classroom.

You may sign out a book from the library in the back of the room.

There is no deadline for finishing the book. However, you will keep a list
of the books you read this year and that list will be passed on to your
sophomore English teacher.

As you read, make a list of vocabulary words you do not know and LOOK THEM UP
IN THE DICTIONARY and define them in your notebook.

The grade you receive for outside reading will depend on the number of
vocabulary words you have identified and defined.

Your “Reading Participation Grade” starts off at 100 and 5 points will be
deducted for each day you do not have your book.

If you have your book but do not read, you still may have five points
deducted.

Words should be defined in your notebooks in the vocab section and written
out by hand (not typewritten).

Your “Outside Reading Grade” will be based on the following chart:

90 - 100 words = A
80 – 89 words = B
70 – 79 words = C
60 – 69 words = D
below 60 words = E

Try to find between 10 - 15 words a week. Your vocabulary list will be
checked every Friday on the following dates:

9-25-09
10-2-09
10-09-09
10-16-09
10-23-09
10-30-09
