Announcements

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! May 2010 be all that you hope it to be.
Special reminders: please return your child's towel for rest time on Monday.
Friday, Jan. 8 is an EARLY DISMISSAL day at 12:00 for our Teacher
Faculty meeting. Children will have lunch in school. Kitchen open, as well.

In Religion this week, we will follow the journey of the Magi as they follow
a star to find Jesus, our Savior. Jan. 4th is the feast of St.Elizabeth Ann
Seton. The children will hear the story of our first American born saint and
her importance to Catholic Schools. We will also begin our chapter entitled -
Hearts are Good. The children will understand that they are special people
who are loved by God and by others. We will discuss the actions that can show
love.

We will continue our lessons on numerals and will work with the numbers
through 12. We will be starting a number booklet to reinforce their knowledge
including writing the number word for each number. The children will identify
the number that comes "before, after, and between" a given number(s) on a
number line. We play "What's missing?", a game where the children put their
number cards 1 - 12 in order, then close their eyes while I "take" a card
from them. After looking at their cards, they tell me what number I took.
This is something you can do at home, too.

Our ILA/Word Literacy lessons include listening for the sound of short /o/ as
in "octopus", and using the /o/ in blending sounds to make words. The
children will also use the reading comprehension skills of making and
confirming predictions as we read stories about animals, the theme of our new
unit. The new sight word this week is "is". Actially, we have been reading
that word since the beginning of school. We will use position words and
recognize them in stories. Action words (verbs) will be identified, as well,
and we will use them in making sentences. I encourage you to work with your
child to use the sight words they have learned to make up sentences at home.
Pictures or drawings of nouns can be added to these sentences.

I think that is all for now. Please always read the Communication from the
school on Monday online for all school information. Thank you as always for
being such wonderful and supportive parents. God bless you.
Have a great week!!
