The Visual Arts Program at UTMS
Introduction to Studio Art
Grade 8
The student will be introduced to a variety of approaches in the visual arts. Experience will be
obtained with medias such as drawing, painting, graphic design, computer graphics, ceramics and
mixed media through hands on projects. Students will develop the ability to apply visual, analytical
and critical skills and develop basic competency in art.
Creative Expression
Students are encouraged to develop their own ideas for artwork, to refine them, and to use media
expressively.
Art activities are appropriate to students' level of development.
Students explore a variety of media and two and three-dimensional art forms.
Lessons show students how to apply design concepts to expressive and imaginative themes and to
everyday life.
Culture and Heritage
Students learn about:
Artworks and artistic traditions in different cultures and times
Art careers and resources in the community.
Types and functions of art in everyday life.
Informed Judgement
Students are introduced to processes of perceiving, analyzing, interpreting, and judging their own
and other's art.
The ability to make informed judgments about art requires critical thinking skills as well as
knowledge about art.
