Novel Spotlight

***Remember, a 3 minute performance of some of your poetry from your Puzzle Poetry Project can be done INSTEAD  OF your 4th MP Novel Project. Check out the ILA   page for more details...***

*Choose a novel NOT being read/researched/reported on for another class.

*Choose a genre different from your chosen novel for the first, second and third marking periods.

*Choose a book that is AT LEAST 150 pages (not counting illustrations).

*Choose a project to present from the idea list different from one you‘ve already done.

Dates for students to begin presenting will be chosen at random on Friday May 29th.

Thursday, June 4th

Friday, June 5th

Be prepared for your presentation on your day!

Be sure your project encompasses the following criteria:

Story Synopsis (20 points) A 1-3 minute summary of your novel’s plot and main characters.

Novel Knowledge (20 points) The 2-5 minute portrayal of the story’s themes and author’s style.

Virtual Visual (40 points) The crafted visual representing your book; that which is meant to bring your novel to life!

Ending Explanation (20 points) 1-2 minute description/ demonstration of how you created your project and why you chose that particular project for your particular chosen novel.

The NON-Book Report Idea List

-Become an archaeologist who found artifacts pertaining to your novel...

-Cook some foods mentioned in the novel or some you feel represent certain characters and put the ‘recipes’ in a mini-cookbook....

-Develop and present a puppet show depicting some important events and characters from your novel...

-Convert the story’s plot into a song and perform it...

-Create a computer dating questionnaire for the main characters in the story...

-Make a Help-Wanted ad for the main characters in the story...

-Design a newspaper based on the main events of your novel...

-Do a dramatic reading of a scene in the book...

-Imagine the characters in your novel went to your school; show/tell how’d they act, who they would/wouldn’t get along with etc...

- Explain the role of gender in the decision making characters, the usage of dialogue, plot etc...

-Fashion a mobile of items related to your novel...

-Impersonate one/some of the book’s characters...

-Create portraits/photos of the characters/settings of the novel...

-Be a journalist reporting/interviewing characters from the novel...

-Imagine and describe having characters over to your house for dinner. Tell of the do’s and don’ts that you’d expect of him/her/them, how your family would react etc...

-Pretend you’re an accountant for one/some of the book’s characters. What did he/she/it buy and why? How much would it cost? Was it necessary? Why was it important to the novel? Etc...

- As a police officer, you’ve received info on one of the story’s characters. Create a “Wanted” poster depicting what crime was committed and what he/she/it looks like...

-Make a “Rules-To-Live-By” list that would be created by the protagonist and one for the antagonist and one that yet another character in the story would live by...

-Give your book a face lift by creating a new book jacket for it...

-Make a test/quiz based on you book...

-Design a travel poster/pamphlet of the setting involved in the novel...

-Create a TV commercial based on the book...

-Produce a mini magazine depicting the main events in the book...

-Put together a cast of the book and what actors would play each role if it were to be turned into a film...

-Place yourself in the story as the main character. Tell/show how the plot would have changed if you were part of the book...

-Bring a scene alive by reading it aloud using special effects and props...

-Present a self discovery forum about what the book has taught you about yourself and/or others. Describe how its contents added to your life.

-Imagine the characters of the novel were animals in a zoo. Describe/depict which animal each would be and why...

-Write up/enact a radio drama of your favorite scene/situation/part in the novel.

-Imagine being one of the characters in the novel. Write out a week’s worth of diary entries he/she/it would’ve kept.

-Choose a favorite chapter/scene from the novel and turn it into a poem(s)...

-Write a comic book version of your novel...

-Create a fake ’MySpace’ page for the protagonist and antagonist. (www.imbee.com, www.whyville.net, www.zigime.com, www.bebo.com, are some options to create your page to work at school.)

-Create a phone conversation between characters discussing what just happened after the climax of the story...

-Formulate ‘answers’ for a Jeopardy episode based on the novel’s plot, setting, theme, characters etc.

-Write/act out a parody/farce of the novel...

-Report on the plot of the story as if it were a news broadcast.

- Rewrite a chapter of the book from a different point of view.

-Create a passport and travelogue for the main characters in you novel...

-Pretend you are a fortune teller and have been asked to predict the futures of the some of several of the book’s characters ten years after the story had ended. What would you see?

-Write the plot for the sequel of this book or a lost chapter/scene and how the original would differ...

-Act as if you’re a real estate agent for the main character in the novel, describe the house he/she’s looking to buy and the type of neighborhood he/she would like to live in...

-Having found/created a time machine, you take the main character to another realm. Where and when would it be and how would you and he/she/it react or survive there?

-Simplify the novel and rewrite it as a story book for youngsters...

-Make character gravestones with fitting epitaphs...

-Tell the story behind the story of your book. Research history, news, places, reader critiques, reactions etc. and report on your novel...

-Describe walking in a character’s shoes...

-Come up with ice cream flavors offering up titles that ‘represent’ the characters...

-Describe your trip to the place(s)/time(s) unveiled in the novel. What happens? How is the story different/similar?

-Imagine you are a psychologist and the main character has come for several sessions. What is revealed about him/her while there?

-Characters see a doctor...

-Characters have your teachers...

-Characters visit your church/synagogue/mosque...

-Characters on trial...

-Character trading cards...

-Character joke/quote book...

-Characters on a cereal box...

-Characters on a billboard...

-Characters as a sculpture/life size cut-out...
