"A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words..."

Puzzle Poetry Project

Due Monday May 18th

Poetry Expo of Projects, May 21st

Poetry Performances (in lieu of novel projects) also May 21st

Your challenge is to prove the adage "A picture is worth a thousand words..." by using poetry to recreate in words what your chosen picture is showing. Each poem you write about your picture is essentially a 'puzzle piece' being used to describe the image bit by bit so that in the end, a poetic interpretation of your picture is illustrated.

Below are the criteria for your completed project:

  • One picture chosen and framed in class
  • At least 12 puzzle poems, each a different style and each being used to piece the picture together poetically, the various poems telling of a particular portion of the picture (use your scope to see a picture within the picture)
  • A total of 1000 words from the puzzle poems to describe/ relate to your picture
  • Final arrangement (in a book, foldable, poster etc.) to present the picture with its poems.
  • Reading of a favorite poem that you wrote about your picture and a brief explanation as to why its a favorite.

In lieu of the 4th Marking Period Novel Project, students may opt to recite and perform -for at least three minutes- original poetry made for their Puzzle Poetry Project. This must be memorized and could range anywhere from one poem to several, depending on the style of said poem(s).
