MONTH OF MAY...... A VERY BUSY MONTH!
CLASS HAPPENINGS
GRADE 1:
Students will learn how to tell time to the hour and half hour on analog clocks and digital clocks.
Students will compare time, order events, and learn to read a calendar.
Students will be building on number recognition, counting, and logical reasoning. Elapsed time
might be a difficult concept for students to grasp at first. Please discuss sequencing with your child
at home using first, next, and last. This will help as we move to ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc)
when we continue to sequence.
We will also estimate time in class and compare minutes to hours as a concept. We will also learn
how to identify parts of the calendar in terms of days, weeks, and months.
We will finally move to measurement during the month of May. It will be a very busy month, but the
concepts can be discussed and reinforced at home through conversations.
Ask your child the date and time often. Also ask your child to sequence his or day.
GRADE 2:
Students will estimate, measure, and compare length, and will also learn about temperature, weight,
and capacity.
Students will use pounds and kilograms to estimate measure, and compare weight.
Students will use cups, pints, quarts, and liters to estimate, measure, and compare capacity, and will
also learn to tell temperature in Fahrenheit and Celsius.
Reminder:
12 inches=1 Foot
3 Feet=1 Yard
100 Centimeters=1 Meter
Many students confuse the concept of AREA and PERIMETER.
Area= the number of square units it takes to cover the inside space of a shape.
Perimeter= the distance around the outside of a shape.
Ask your child to estimate weight and distance often.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT AT HOME.
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH:
Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or the same way.

MISTAKES HELP US LEARN. IT IS OKAY TO MAKE MISTAKES; IT IS NOT OKAY TO GIVE UP!
Thank you for your continued support at home.
