About JOY...
JOY (Joining Old & Young) is an intergenerational writing program. A Word
Shop poet from the
Northwest Bergen Senior Center in Midland Park leads each critique/discussion
group.(Students
meet in groups of 4-6.)
The program received an A+ for Kids Award and a Best Practice Award
from the New Jersey Department of Education. JOY was also featured in
"Writing magazine and mentioned in Bill Moyers' book, "The Language
of Life––A Festival of Poets."
Two luncheon/critiques are held at VMS for parents, seniors, and VMS
students.
The program culminates with a poetry reading and reception at
Barnes & Noble in Paramus in June.
Each participant receives a JOY folder with a schedule for the sessions
and due dates for the poems. All poems must be typed and given to Ms.
Vihonski at least 3 days before the session so that she can make copies of
each poem for group members.
A schedule for the year will be given to each student.
