Honors Earth Science, your overall grade for any given marking period is
determined by the following:

A
TEST covering the material contained in this assignment will be
given the second day of school Friday September
4, 2009.
This will be your first TEST of the school year.
The
HONORS EARTH SCIENCE SUMMER ASSIGNMENT ANSWER SHEETS (and additional printed
material) will be checked on the first day of school Thursday September
3, 2009and
collected on the second day Friday September
4, 2009.
They will count as your first LAB GRADE. All work will be placed
in the ESH Honors Project Folder (the same folder that you received your
project in) for submission in the proper order.
Task
15 (Practicing the Cornell Note Taking Method will be due in your ESH Honors
Project Folder as well on Friday September
4, 2009.
It
will count as your first QUIZ grade!
All
electronically-submitted internet activities completed through the Tarbuck &
Lutgens text book web site may be submitted online at any time prior to 6
PM Friday

GENERAL
INSTRUCTIONS:
The
completion of many of the tasks set forth in the Honors Earth Science will
require you to take notes or answer questions. Your notes and responses must
be handwritten on the HONORS EARTH SCIENCE SUMMER ASSIGNMENT ANSWER
SHEETS (HESSAAS), Prologue section and Earth Science Reference Table Questions
sheets. You will use these sheets to help answer questions that you will
electronically submit prior to the first day of school. These sheets will be
checked on the first day of school and collected on the second day. These
sheets will count as a LAB GRADE and will be placed in the ESH
Honors Project Folder (the same folder that you received your project in) for
submission in the proper order.
TASK
1: INTRODUCTION TO YOUR TEXT
Your
text book for this course is EARTH SCIENCE 10TH Ed by
Tarbuck & Lutgens. It is a college level text. After this year, you will have
read, analyzed and studied all 686 pages of this book. It is time for you to
become familiar with this masterpiece.
Open
your book to the BRIEF CONTENTS on page v.
Read
over the BRIEF CONTENTS of your text.
On
your HONORS EARTH SCIENCE SUMMER ASSIGNMENT ANSWER SHEETS (HESSAAS)
answer/complete the following:
1.
Our
text contains 7 units. List the 7 units.
2.
Name
the unit in which we will study oceanography.
3.
The
study of geology involves the first four units of our text. What is the number

on the Introduction to Earth Science link. You will find a list of objectives
for the introductory chapter of your book.
Click
on “summary” found on the left of the page. This is a summary of the
introductory unit. Read this summary From this summary answer the following:
1.
Explain
the nebular hypothesis.
2.
What
is Earth science and what four branches does it include?
3.
List
and describe the two sources of energy that power the Earth system.
4.
List
and describe the two broad categories of resources.
On
this summary page you will find an “outline” button.
Click
on the “outline” button. You may “open” or “save” and then “open” this file. Print
this outline. This is the outline for the introductory chapter. It is a GREAT
study tool.
Staple
the outline to your HESSAAS.
Go
back to the summary page of the web site. Click on the short answer, critical
thinking, multiple choice, true and false, and identification links. When you
are done reading and studying your introductory chapter, you will be coming
back to these links to answer/complete these questions.
TASK
3: READ “INTRODUCTION TO EARTH SCIENCE”
You
are now going to read and study the introductory chapter of your text (p 1 –
16). You may want to take notes on this chapter as you read through it. You
will be tested on this chapter (as well as on some additional chemistry and
physics material) on the second day of school. Use the outline you printed of
the chapter as you read.
TASK
4: KEY TERMS
Write
the definitions of the Key Terms (p 17 of your text) on your HONORS EARTH
SCIENCE SUMMER ASSIGNMENT ANSWER SHEETS.

5: REVIEW QUESTIONS
Answer
the review questions (p 17 of your text) on your HONORS EARTH SCIENCE SUMMER
ASSIGNMENT ANSWER SHEETS.

6: SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS
Return
to your text book web site. Within the Introduction to Earth Science chapter,
go to the “short answer” link.
Answer
the short answer questions.
After
you are completely satisfied with your answers, select the “Submit Answers for
Grading” button at the end of the quiz.
Scroll
down to the bottom of the page to where it says “E-mail Your Results”, fill
in your first and last name. Select (check) the “me” box, the instructor
box, AND the “TA” box. Put in your e-mail address to ensure you get an
additional copy of your results. Put my school e-mail address in the
instructor e-mail address area. Put my home e-mail address in the “TA” e-mail
area. Under the “Send as” column, select HTML. Don’t select
“E-mail Results” yet!
Scroll
up the page and select “PRINT THIS PAGE” in the upper right hand corner of the
page. (You need a hard copy of your answers to study from). Staple these pages
to your HESSAAS.
Now
scroll back down the page and select “E-mail Results”. If all was done
correctly, you will get a confirmation page acknowledging the addresses where
your answers were sent.
TASK

Complete
the same procedure as in TASK 6 for the Critical Thinking Questions on your
text book web site.
Again,
be sure to print a copy of your answers before you select “E-mail Results”.

graphs, tables, and other information.

the Earth Science Reference Table Questions. Place these pages in your ESH
Honors Project Folder (the same folder that you received your project in).

15: PRACTICE THE CORNELL NOTE TAKING METHOD
Examine
in detail (using the links from the “study links” section of Ms. Schoepp’s
website) the Cornell Note Taking Method.
Go
back and take note on the introductory chapter of your text using this method.

additional sheet of explanation for this note taking strategy has been
provided in your folder.
