"Good Readers" think and use strategies while they are reading. In class I am introducing new ways to think while reading. As a new stategy is introduced I will explain it here. Please encourage your reader to try different stategies while reading. Children should be using the following stategies when reading: Text to Self: Comparing the book to something in your life. Text to Text: Comparing the book to something in another book. Text to World: Comparing the book to something in the world. Visualize: Make a movie in your head. Prediction: We use "schema"...what we already know, to make logical predictions about what we are reading. Retelling: "Say it again"...Characters, setting, problem, solution, events...Beginning, Middle, End... Locating important details...What are the details that add meaning to the story? The children should be making inferences while they are reading. We tell them that they should try to figure out what the author means or what we can figure out with the information we have. |
