Reader's Notebooks

Dear Students,

Your Reader's Notebook is a place where you will write about your reading. It will become one of the ways we will "talk" about what you think about what you are reading. You can tell me about any connections you make, any questions you have or anything else you think about during your independent reading.

You are responsible for writing one letter to me each week. I will respond to your letter and it will become a conversation between us. Please remember to respond to any questions I may ask you. You are also responsible for handing in your notebook on your assigned day. If you are absent or forget to hand your notebook in, you should hand it in on the next school day. Although you must write one letter per week, I will collect your notebooks every other week, alternating with your writer's notebooks. I will respond to each letter when I collect your notebook.

Some topics for your letters:

• tell me about something you found interesting
• tell me about an important character
• tell me about a character that you find interesting
• tell me about questions that you have about your reading
• tell me things that puzzled you while you were reading
• tell me what the story means to you
• tell me what your thoughts about the author's message
• tell me what the message means to you
• why you choose this book to read
