Program Review
Mr. Reeves’ Fifth Grade
Reading
I utilize small-group, guided, differentiated reading lessons in my classroom. I begin by
assessing the independent and instructional reading levels for each student in my class. I then group
the students into reading groups of 5-6 students. The students participate in reading lessons that
are beyond what they could perform independently. If a student currently reads at a 6.0 level, then
they are exposed to literature at a 7.0 level. The students are asked comprehension, vocabulary,
context, insight, and prediction questions each time they read a passage. Additionally, students are
given written comprehension questions using the ACE format. Reading instruction is given in
twenty-minute blocks, to each group, every day of the week.
Math
Bandelier uses the Everyday Mathematics program. Lessons consist of whole group instruction
to introduce topics, partner activities, independent work, and skill-development games. Homework
includes a mandatory “Study-Link” page and an optional “Challenge” page. Daily practice
equations/concepts are also given each morning from 9:00-9:10.
Writing
Writing lessons are based on a Six Trait format. Student work is assessed with a rubric that
scores the draft/revision/editing process, ideas, voice, word choice, organization, conventions, and
sentence fluency. Students are trained to use this rubric as a guide to measure the quality of their
writing. Students also become proficient at assessing the work of others.
Most of our writing lessons will focus on non-fiction writing. Students will learn to incorporate
research into their writing and to write effectively for specific purposes. All writing projects will
involve collaboration with the teacher and other students.
Science
Science lessons are taught with science kits from the Center for Hands-On Learning. These kits
use (no surprise) hands-on lessons to teach concepts. The kits are a highly effective and fun way to
learn about science. I will also have students participate in activities such as “Design a Dinosaur”
that I have developed to help students learn about genetics.
Social Studies
Our social studies lessons will be about The United States of America. Lessons begin with
stone-age cultures and progress all the way into the twenty-first century, covering everything in
between these two time periods. Independent projects, such as our Aztec/Mayan/Incan Power Point
presentations will also be given.
Discipline
I maintain a fun, orderly, respectful, and productive classroom. If students violate our class
rules (which they made) they put their names on the board. Subsequent warnings result in a loss of
privileges, parent phone calls, and detention.
Communication
Agendas
Student Agendas are an important organizational and communication tool. Students record
assignments daily and I check for parent notes every morning. Please sign your student’s agenda
nightly.
Webpage
I have updates, homework, assignment information, field trip information, and an email link
from my web page. You can link to this page under the “staff” section of the Bandelier website.
