Kindergarten Standards

Language Arts:

Listen to, read, react to, and retell information

1. Retell, reenact, or dramatize stories or parts of stories, including personal events.

2. Demonstrate sense of story (e.g. beginning, middle, end characters, details).

3. Demonstrate familirity with a variety of types of books and selections (e.g. picture books, caption books, short

informational texts, nursery rhymes, word/finger/puppet plays, reenactments of familiar stories).

4. Role-play and act out stories (e.g. fairy tales, songs, rhymes).

5. Follow simple oral instructions.

Demonstrate competence in speaking to convey information

1. Retell, reenact, or dramatize stories or parts of stories, including personal events.

2. Use correct words to name objects or tell actions.

3. Use speaking skills to connect experiences by:

*listening to and retelling stories

*discussing and dramatizing stories

*discovering relationships

*taking turns, expressing ideas, and asking questions

4. Use a variety of sentence patterns.

5. Ask questions to resolve confusion about a topic.

6. Clarify and sort works by general categories.

Use language, literature, and media to gain and demonstrate awareness of cultures around the world

1. Listen and respond to stories based on familiar themes and plots.

2. Relate characters and events to their own life experiences.

3. Demonstrate familiarity with stories and activities related to various ethnic groups and countries.

Math:

Demonstrate an understanding of the place-value structure of the base-ten number system:

*count with understanding and recognize 'how many' in sets of objects up to 20

*read and write whole numbers up to 20

*compare and order whole numbers up to 20

*connect numerals to the quantities they represent using various physical models

*use an organized counting method to keep track of quantities while counting (one-to-one correspondence) (e.g. touch object once and only once as counting a set.)

*order sets of objects and numbers from least to most or most to least

Understand patterns, relations, and functions

1. Identify the attributes of objects (e.g. the ability to identify attributes as a foundational skill for sorting and

classifying).

2. Sort, classify, and order objects by size, number, and other properties.

3. Recognize, reproduce, describe, extend and creat repeating patterns (e.g. color, shape, size, sound, movement,

simple numbers).

Identify common objects in their in their environments and describe their geometric features:

*describe, identify, model and draw common geometric objects (e.g., circle, triangle, square, rectangle, cube,

sphere, cone)

*compare familiar plane and solid objects by common attributes (e.g. shape, size, number of corners)

Understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems, and process of measurement.

1. Describe and compare, using appropriate concepts and vocabulary, the measurable properties of length (e.g.

heavy, light) and time (e.g. shorter, longer, taller), volume (e.g. full, empty), weight (e.g. heavy, light), and time

(e.g. before, after, morning, afternoon, days of the week).

2. Use tools to make predictions (e.g. using a balance scale, predicting how many cups a container will hold and

then filling it to check the prediction).

3. Measure using non-standard units of measurement (e.g. use paper clips to measure desk top, use of yarn or rope

to measure distance in classroom).

4. Use digital and analog (face) clocks to tell time to the hour.

Formulate questions that can be addressed with data and collect, organize, and display relevant data to answer them.

1. Collect data about objects and events in the environment to answer simple questions (e.g. brainstorm questions about self and surroundings, collect data, and record the results using objects, pictures, and pictographs).
