WELCOME TO OUR WEBSITE!
LITERACY CYCLES: This is a part of our day when we break in to small groups.
Each group will have a literacy element and a follow up activity. Three of the
groups will have an adult with them and 1 is run somewhat independently. The
activities are as follows:
TRADITIONS/CUSTOMS/CELEBRATIONS: Halloween kicks off our Fall/Winter
traditions/customs/celebrations unit. We will be studying different traditions
/customs /celebrations that happen especially in the Fall/Winter. If you or
your family have tradition, custom or celebration you would like to share with
our class please let me know so we may arrange a time to
have you come in to the class and share with us your particular tradition
custom and/or celebration.
DAY OF THE DEAD: We will read the book Day of the Dead by Carol Gnojewski
(Chap. 6 Skulls and symbols). We will then discuss the celebration of the Day
of the Dead with the kids and its components. We will then decorate our own
sugar skull.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will identify family customs and traditions and
explain their importance.
SKELETONS: Just when you thought Halloween was over! We will read the book
Calavera Abecedario by Jeanette Winter. We will then make our own version of
Day of the Dead skeletons and come up with a word that describes our skeleton
from A-Z.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will identify initial sounds of words and have an
understanding of words that describe.
STREGA NONA: We will read the book Strega Nona and discuss the differences
between the play and the book. We will then draw our favorite part of the book
or play.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will compare and contrast the book and the play
Strega Nona.
ALPHABET BOOKS (LETTER Hh): This will be an ongoing literacy cycle where the
kids work somewhat independently on the Hh page of their book. They will use
stencils to create pictures that begin with the letter Hh. This page will be
saved and added to the others at the end of the year.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will use phonemic awareness and letter
recognition to try and read words. Kids will also analyze sounds in a word
and write the dominant consonant letters.
WORKSHOP: This is a part of our day that is individually self paced. There are
8 activities that each child will complete in order. This is also a part of
our day that where the focus is on math, science and social studies.
1. COLOR POTS: Kids will explore color using crayons, cut out and match color
words on the spoons for each color.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD:Kids will identify color and use early literacy skills
to match the color word to the color of pot.
2. QUILT PATTERN: Kids will create their own pattern on a paper quilt using
pattern blocks.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will use geometric shapes and become familiar with
names of shapes and design a recognizable pattern.
3. NAME PRACTICE: Kids will practice writing names using dry erase markers and
dotted lines to form letters correctly.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD:
4. BODY BUILDING: Kids will color, cut out and put together body parts to
create a whole body. They will then put labels on the parts of the body they
built.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD:Kids will learn body parts and their places. They will
use letter sound knowledge to read labels.
5. UP, UP AND AWAY: Kids will decorate hot air balloons and arrange them in
order from 1-10.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will learn to recognize numbers from 1-10. Kids
will explain that a balloon looks smaller as it goes higher in the air.
6. COUNTING BY TWOS: The kids will illustrate a pumpkin book that will help
them learn to count by twos.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will learn to count to at least 10 by twos.
7. PUMPKINS BY THE BARN: The kids will read and color a book about pumpkins
everywhere! On each page the kids will count the number of pumpkins they see
on the picture then write that number on the back of the page.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will use counting and number writing to illustrate
the number of pumpkins on each page of the book. Kids will use beginning
literacy skills to read the words and point out the rhyming words.
8. 10 BLACK DOTS: We will read the book 10 Black Dots by Donald Crews. Kids
will then pick a number card and a color card and make their own picture using
( # ) ( color ) dots make at ____________.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will use knowledge of early literacy skills and
number sense to figure out the number and color word then create a picture.
