WELCOME TO OUR WEBSITE!

LITERACY CYCLES: This is a part of our day when we break in to small groups.
Each group will have a literacy element and a follow up activity. Three of the
groups will have an adult with them and 1 is run somewhat independently. The
activities are as follows: 

TRADITIONS/CUSTOMS/CELEBRATIONS: Halloween kicks off our Fall/Winter 
traditions/customs/celebrations unit. We will be studying different traditions
/customs /celebrations that happen especially  in the Fall/Winter. If you or
your family have tradition, custom or celebration you would like to share with
our class please let me know so we may arrange a time to have you come in to
the class and share with us your particular tradition custom and/or celebration. 

WREN DAY: In Ireland they celebrate St. Stephen's day...there is an old folk
tale about a contest among the birds. The bird who is able to soar the highest
wins the title King of the Birds. A tricky wren rode on the back of an eagle,
jumped off at the last minute and won the title King of all birds. 
The kids will make their own version of the wren.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will learn of an Irish tradition and celebration.

KWANZAA KINARA: We will read the book Seven Candles of Kwanzaa by Andrea Davis
Pinkney. The kids will then make their own kinara.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will identify and discuss the meaning of the words
celebrated during Kwanzaa.
  
WINTER BREAK FILMSTRIP: Kids will brainstorm things they did during winter
break. We will then make our own filmstrip and share things we did during
winter break. 
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will use early literacy skills to sound out words
and to share with our class.

ALPHABET BOOKS (LETTER Ll): This will be an ongoing literacy cycle where the
kids work somewhat independently on the Ll page of their book. They will use
stencils to create pictures that begin with that letter . This page will be
saved and added to the others at the end of the year.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will use phonemic awareness and letter
recognition to try and read words. Kids will also analyze sounds in a word
and write the dominant consonant letters.

WORKSHOP: This is a part of our day that is individually self paced. There are
8 activities that each child will complete in order. This is also a part of
our day that where the focus is on math, science and social studies. 


1. COUNTING BY TWOS: The kids will illustrate a pumpkin book that will help
them learn to count by twos.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will learn to count to at least 10 by twos.

2. PUMPKINS BY THE BARN: The kids will read and color a book about pumpkins
everywhere! On each page the kids will count the number of pumpkins they see
on the picture then write that number on the back of the page.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will use counting and number writing to illustrate
the number of pumpkins on each page of the book. Kids will use beginning
literacy skills to read the words and point out the rhyming words.

3. 10 BLACK DOTS: We will read the book 10 Black Dots by Donald Crews. Kids
will then pick a number card and a color card and make their own picture using
(  #  ) (  color  ) dots make at ____________.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will use knowledge of early literacy skills and
number sense to figure out the number and color word then create a picture.

4. MY NUMBER BOOK: We will be practicing writing our numbers and expressing
them in picture, words, and tally marks.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Children will learn to write numbers with correct
letter formation and be able to express a number in different ways to develop
number sense.

5. MAKE A BRACELET: Kids will pick a pattern to follow (ie. ABAB, ABCABC,
AABB, etc...) they will then lay the beads out to match the pattern they
picked to follow and string it together then put the bracelet on and enjoy.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Children will learn about patterns.

6. HOW BIG IS A FOOT?: Kids will trace their foot and measure things around
the room using their foot cut out.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will use non-conventional measurement. 

7. LAST NAME WRITING: Kids will practice writing their last name using correct
letter formation.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will write their name with correct letter formation.

8. CHINESE NEW YEAR COUNTING BOOK: Kids will practice number writing and color
in pictures of a Chinese New Year book.
KINDERGARTEN STANDARD: Kids will write numbers with correct formation. Kids
will become 
familiar with numbers and number sense.
