Reviews due before Thanksgiving break.

2.	Flies-Plus-Thirty
Your writing assignment for Lord of the Flies is to write a fiction story
about a chance encounter between any two characters from the novel. The
encounter will occur thirty years after the events of the novel. More
structural guidelines to come. For now, remember to think like a writer as
you read William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. Just as Margaret Atwood had to
read Homer’s The Odyssey with a detective’s scrutiny prior to writing The
Penelopiad, you need to comb every detail of Golding’s novel prior to writing
your Flies+30 tale.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 14—Mon. Nov. 19
•	SS #23; discuss Flies ch. 5-6; narrative conflict guide sheet
•	Homework: Read pp 109-168 in Lord of the Flies (ch. 7-10). Annotate; answer
questions. You have eight days to read 59 pages—an average of 7.5 pages a day.
I advise you to read no less than one chapter at a time. As you read,
underline descriptive phrases describing key characters and their actions.
Especially pay attention to the verbs. Actions speak louder than words, and a
story writer creates actions with verbs. Verbs define characters more than do
adjectives. Verbs create the story. Pay attention to Golding’s use of verbs.
