Students in eighth grade English can expect frequent homework assignments. Assignments are given, in writing, at the beginning of class. Students are asked to copy the assignment with its specific set of directions into their daily planners. All assignments are due at the beginning of the subsequent class unless I specify otherwise. For full credit, students must submit assignments on their respective due dates, follow the assignment's directions, and complete the work neatly and thoroughly. Although students may hand write their homework assignments, I encourage them to word process all work. If an assignment is not submitted for full credit, it maybe turned in for late credit if it is submitted within one week of its due date. Late credit means that an assignment drops one full letter grade from its potential score. That is, if the work were of A+ quality, the student would receive a B+; if the work were of B+ quality, it would receive a C+. Reading assignments are checked by way of reading check quizzes. I expect students to be in charge of setting, characters, conflict, and those details that move the conflict forward. I encourage students to devise some system to check their comprehension following the careful reading of the assignment. Many students will involve a parent or sibling in this process. Homework assignments are weighted at 20% of a students average.
