Independent Study Criteria

Junior or senior students who have taken a visual art course for at least one year are eligible
for independent study. The student must be self-
motivated and have a significant drive to manage her/his own learning experience. 80 hours of
work time per semester is a minimum
requirement and will represent .5 credits.

In order to sign up for a visual art independent study, you need to submit a statement of
intention, Your statement of intention should be a one
page, double-spaced document that describes what you want to do and how you expect to achieve
it. I understand that this may need to be
adjusted as the semester progresses but this page should reflect your thoughts and feelings now.
The statement of intention is due before we
begin the independent study.

Completing an art portfolio is one of the criteria for successful completion of the independent
study. We can discuss the appropriate form this
should take given your chosen direction. If you are going to use your portfolio as an
enhancement for your college applications, I will help you
document the body of work produced in your independent study. Most colleges prefer slides but
many are accepting digital portfolios. Original
artwork is allowed when personal visits with an admissions representative is appropriate or at a
National Portfolio Day.

As part of your independent study, a showing of your work in a public place is highly
recommended. The student lounge is available for this
purpose. However, you can find other alternatives either on or off campus. You be required to
show once for every semester.

Regular meetings and critiques are required. Students are responsible for scheduling these
meeting and critiques once every two weeks.

• Encourage creative and systematic investigation of formal and conceptual issues.
• Emphasize making art as an ongoing process that involves the student in
informed and critical decision making.
• Help students develop technical skills and familiarize them with the functions of
the visual elements.
• Encourage students to become independent thinkers who will contribute
inventively and critically to their culture through the making of art.
