How do I refer my student to individual and/or group counseling?

Referral forms for both individual and group counseling are available online
under the GROUP COUNSELING link, and in Mrs. Montaņo's office. A referral
can be made in person, by phone, or through the student's teacher. Students
being referred to group counseling will be seen in an individual session
first, to determine appropriate group or service. At least three students
in the same grade level are needed to form a group. This process may take a
few months. While the group is forming the student can be seen for brief,
individual counseling upon parent and/or teacher request.

How often will a student receive counseling or participate in a group?

Students typically will be seen for individual counseling every other color
schedule (approximately 2 times a month). Groups will meet once a week.
Counseling is usually brief. Due to the amount of students needing support
it is unlikely students will receive weekly individual counseling. If
student's needs are beyond the scope of Comanche's counseling program and/or
could benefit from long-term, weekly clinical counseling a referral will be
made to an outside agency.

Why is individual counseling temporary and short-term?

The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) model allows for counselors
to provide temporary, short-term crisis intervention counseling. Issues
that are chronic and/or acute are referred to outside agencies. Our main
focus is on "prevention" which is delivered through classroom guidance
lessons.

Do all classes receive classroom guidance?

Yes. Every class receives classroom guidance every other color schedule
rotation. Each classroom will have approximately 11, 45 minute lessons,
per year on various topics. Please see the COUNSELING PROGRAM link for more
information and the CLASSROOM GUIDANCE link for topics and dates.
