| Being a Comanche Cub Peer Mediator is a wonderful opportunity and privilege
for 4th and 5th grade students. Conflict is a normal part of living and our
peer mediators help to resolve conflict by providing students resolution in
a neutral, positive, and supportive way.
Peer mediators sign up for one shift a month. During this shift peer
mediators are on duty all scheduled recesses of the day. For example on a
Monday a mediator will be on duty for the morning, lunch, and afternoon
recess.
Each peer mediator is equipped with a red vest and mediator notebook. The
notebook has mediation guidelines, log sheet, playground rules, incident
reports, stickers, and a pen. Peer mediators will pick up
the vest and notebook from Mrs. Montaņo at morning recess and return the
items following the afternoon recess. ALL PEER MEDIATORS ARE RESPONSIBLE
FOR THEIR VESTS AND NOTEBOOKS.
All peer mediation support occurs during recess time only. Students who do
not resolve a conflict will have to schedule an appointment for the
following recess. If the conflict occurs during the last recess and it is
NOT resolved then the peer mediator will refer the students to Mrs. Montaņo.
When students resolve their conflicts, they may receive a sticker. Peer
mediators verbally congratulate the students for doing a great job on
solving their conflicts.
TRAINING:
Typically training for new peer mediators starts in the spring. However,
special training may take place for new and interested 4th and 5th grade
students in the fall, if several requests are made.
CHARACTER COUNTS:
Character really does count when you are a peer mediator. Peer mediators
are role models and are expected to demonstrate the six pillars of character
(respect, citizenship, caring, trustworthiness, fairness, and
responsibility) in and out of the classroom. A poor behavior and attitude
could jeopardize membership and participation as a peer mediator, this
would include the Annual Celebration in May. If you have any questions or
concerns please contact Mrs. Montaņo at 884-5275.
