There will generally be homework each night, Monday through Thursday. I
usually do not give homework over the weekend. There may be long-term
projects which, if put off until the last minute, will require your student to
work over a weekend. However, I give notice and sufficient time to complete
long-term projects, so that weekend work should not be an issue.
There will be nightly reading. Your student should read for a minimum of
30 minutes a night. If your student is not reading on grade level (5th
grade), it is extremely important that they read even more minutes and the
reading material must be at their current reading level. I believe that
reading is the single most important homework your student will engage in
this year. Please make sure that your student reads quality literature for
the majority of their reading time. I will monitor this from school using
their reading response logs. I need your help to monitor your student's
reading choices as well. If you have questions regarding what comprises
quality literature, please feel free to discuss with me or the Librarian. I
also have a literature link on my web page to assist you in selecting books.
Other nightly homework is usually review material that supports our
classroom study. This will be normally be in the areas of math, social
studies, spelling and writing. I never assign homework that are new concepts
not yet covered in class, unless it is a research assignment. Also, it is
important for you to know that I discuss homework assignments every afternoon
prior to dismissal. At that time,I will ask if there are any questions or
confusion over the assignment. If your student is comes home and is unsure of
the nightly assignment, please stress with them that they need to make sure
they listen and ask for clarification of their homework before they leave
school.
