Spelling

We will be using the Rebecca Sitton Spelling program this year. This program is not a tradititonal spelling program where student receieve a list of words to study each week and then are tested on the list once a week. Instead, Sitton teaches the student spelling patterns, phonics and high frequency words which truly build spelling skills. Spelling words are recycled until learned and students learn spelling in the context of reading and writing which means the word and its spelling will stick with them and not be forgotten the next week. The students will primarily be studying spelling through personal spelling lists that we compile from their own writing. These are words that they are not spelling correectly in their daily writing. We are also focusing on vocabulary development using words assocaiated with our classroom reading. Students will also have homework in the areas of multiple meaning words, synonyms, antonyms and homophones.
