Homework

Your child will learn the most and do the best work in a joint effort between
the home and the school. Here are some of the areas where you can help at
home:

1. Nightly Reading - Required
Reading is one of the best ways to improve and enhance a wide variety of
language skills. Reading with your child makes a powerful statement to the
child about the importance and value of reading.

All Gov. Bent students are required to read to an adult or have an adult read
to them 15-20 minutes per day (Monday-Thursday). Children must keep a daily
reading record that lists the days read, the name of the story(ies) read, the
child's signature, the parent's signature, and the date. Charts are turned
in every Friday.

2. Nightly Writing - Required
All Gov. Bent students are required to "write" in their Nightly Writing
Journals for about 15-20 minutes on Monday-Thursday evenings. At first, your
child may "scribble" or "doodle", or write words they try to sound out
phonetically. As the year progresses, your child will start writing more
complete sentences using correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.
Parental assistance will greatly facilitate the learning process. Please
date each entry.

3. Spelling tests:
Children will be expected to practice and learn a weekly list of spelling
words for a weekly spelling teat.

4. Time tests:
Children will be expected to practice and learn a weekly list of math
addition and subtraction facts for a weekly time test.

5. Miscellaneous:
Students will have regular reading, writing, and math homework that needs to
be completed nightly (Monday-Thursday) whenever assigned. These assignments
must be returned each morning for the teacher to grade, record, and return.
