Language Arts and Literature
This year my Language
Arts students will have two types of homework assignments. Each week students
will be responsible to read three nights a week for thirty minutes a night. I
will accept most sources including but not limited to; Internet reading
(online magazines and other articles NOT myspace, blogs, video games, etc.),
books, magazines, manuals, newspapers, comic books, homework for other
classes, etc. I ask you not to count anything that is on television. We will
keep track of home reading on a weekly reading log sheet that must be
initialed by a guardian each night and students will write a paragraph
summarizing their reading, or answering a question that I have posed for the
week. Students will read a total of one and a half hours a week and weekly
logs will be collected each Friday.
I believe that home
reading is the best way to encourage students to become excellent readers and
writers. I also allow students to choose their home reading because it is my
belief that the best way to generate excitement about reading is to ask
students to read what they like. Reading is reading after all.
The second type of
homework assignment will be work from the spelling book. Each student received
a spelling book during registration. I will be assigning some work from the
book on Fridays. I will collect each student's spelling packet every other
Friday to align with spelling quizzes.
I do not intend to
assign typical course work as homework, but occasionally students will need to
finish class work at home. I will provide ample time during class, but I will
allow students to finish some assignments at home.
Drama
This year the drama
classes will have two types of regular homework assignments. Students will be
required to complete a number of vocabulary activities and occasionally other
book work. It is very important for anyone involved in the theatre to know
the professional terminology so we will work on building student knowledge of
those terms. There will be short vocab. quizzes to ensure student's
understanding of vocabulary.
The second type of
homework will be memorization of lines for either monologues, skits, or the
final class plays. It is very helpful for the families of drama students to
help their child run lines. It is difficult for an actor/actress to learn
lines without someone else helping them practice.
There should be very
little other homework. However, if a student uses his/her time poorly he/she
may bring home class work to finish at home. If you have any questions please
contact me.
Journalism
Journalism students
will be working on yearbook pages, news paper articles, and other odd
assignments that coincide with creating mass media publications. Occasionally
students will be asked to attend an after school event that pertains to their
pages for the yearbook. There are almost always numerous opportunities to get
these events covered, but if and when a conflict occurs please contact me. I
will be happy to figure out alternate ways to get coverage of events.
Students will be
required to follow current events as homework for this class. I will be
assigning specific types of media for each week, this way students will be
exposed to numerous types of media. I will be able to provide most of these
resources in class, but if your family has a subscription to a news magazine
such as Time or Newsweek, I would really appreciate any back issues you have,
so I can pass those out to students who need them for homework.
Students will work in
teams to create news articles and yearbook pages. The most important thing
for journalism students to recognize is the importance of meeting deadlines,
so students may need to work on articles at home if they are not able to make
the best use of their class time.
