Homework

Homework Philosophy:
I believe homework should reinforce the work that is being done in the
classroom. Homework should not be a substitute teacher, in which new
curriculum is presented because there was not enough time in a school day.
Homework should not be busy work that creates frustration at home. Research
states that homework does not become beneficial to kids until high school,
when they are able to complete work by themselves with little or no help
from parents. Finally, kids need to be able to play, be involved in sports
or extracurricular activities, and interact with family.
With these thoughts in mind I have developed my homework packet so all
children can be successful. Students will receive a homework packet on
Monday. A cover sheet attached to the packet will explain which assignment
is due on what day. Each assignment will reinforce what we are doing in the
classroom but it should NOT take more than 20 to 30 minutes to complete.
Some children may finish with in ten minutes and that is ok. I also will
assign reading each day for 30 minutes, so homework should never take longer
than an hour. I hope that I am able to teach your children the core
curriculum during the school day so that they can do other things at home. I
know that middle school will bring on hours of homework and studying but I
believe that with the study and organizational skills I teach your children
they will be able to cope with the homework.

Also, students will have month to month projects and book bingos to
complete. You will have more explanation on book bingos when an
informational paper goes home on the first days of school.
