Independent Study

Course Description for Independent Study
SY 2008-2009
	Independent Study is a course designed to allow students a broad 
range of choices. The following goals and objectives are aligned with 
Benchmarks and Standards for gifted students. 
•	Students will identify career interests and aptitudes to develop an 
educational plan which supports personal career goals.
•	Students will utilize and manage resources effectively to produce 
quality services and products.
•	Students will demonstrate the technological knowledge and skills 
required for future careers.

9/26/08
All Independent Study Guides, Logs and Journals must be complete and reviewed
by Ms. Greer. Six week grades will be turned on this date.
•	Students will develop and demonstrate responsible and ethical 
workplace behaviors.
•	Students will develop effective leadership, interpersonal and team 
skills.
At an initial meeting with Ms. Greer the student will be given a packet that 
describes the course requirements and a portfolio will be set-up. During this 
first meeting several possible areas of study and/or projects will be 
discussed. The student will be given time to read and fill out the packet. 
The student will be expected to set a time for bi-weekly meetings with Ms. 
Greer. At these meetings the student’s Journal and progress and/or any 
problems the student may be having will be discussed. There will be a chart 
set-up at the front of the class with the student’s name and a record of 
meetings, Journal entries and grades filled in. At the end of his or her 
study the student will be required to schedule and make a presentation to a 
class.
The following is the grading Rubric:
•	Meetings with Ms. Greer-20%
•	Journal & Log-50%
•	Presentation- 30%
By the end of the student’s Junior year he or she will be expected to have 
completed the software program of CHOICES. This program allows the student to 
explore personal interests and institutions of higher learning that align 
with personal interests, The student will also become familiar with entrance 
requirements. 
The following list contains other possible areas of investigation:
•	 Research, analysis, and comparison of cultures different from your 
own
•	Research data related to a career interest. This may include 
interviews.
•	History of different music forms.
•	Architecture
•	Films & film making
•	Photography and photographers
•	Development of a video project
•	History of dance
•	Impact of wars upon medicine
•	Weaponry
•	Pursuit of a personal interest such as psychology
•	Comparison of U.S. and Russian Space Programs
9/11/08
All Independent Study Students must have their Guide to independent Study
completed by Friday.9/14/07 with Study topics outlined.
9/21
All students must have updated Logs & Journals with Independent Study
identified to Ms. Greer for grading. Students should have records of meetings
with Ms. Greer at least bi-weekly entered in their Logs & Journals along with
time spent on research and lists of sources. Please remember that your
opinions of your research should be in your Journal.

Students must update Logs & Journals
Sign-up reminders for ACT & PSAT

11/05/08
Begin 3rd 6 weeks.

11/10/08
Students who have completed their Independent Study project must sign-up for a
presentation.If he/she intends to remain in course they must select a new
study topic.
