Prove to me that you should borrow my vehicle while ditching a class, and, of course, use rhetorical strategies to get your way! Two handouts will help you talk about important aspects of the poem, "Out! Out!" Create a thesis and three topic sentences for an outline of an essay. Due Friday. You get time to work on your group project - sell your canto. Sign up with me, and generate good ideas that you can implement on your own this week with each other. Run-on sentences assignment and discussion - "Be careful! Don't splice or fuse!" Discuss How the author uses language to convey meaning in relation to our friends, parents being angry with us and also in relation to our president's various speeches. Using that as a basis, read Out! Out!" again and discuss How the author uses language to convey meaning. Questions 48-58 with a brief explanation as to why you chose that answer. Read the poem, "Out, Out-" and we will continue with this next period. Friday, October 2 Check out The Kite Runner, and bring to class with you every day. We'll begin it next week. Talk about voice and look at ten awesome starts to novels to use as models of what works. Finish Dante's Inferno soon, so you may begin and complete your essay by Friday. But oops, Friday we'll be at the Balloon Fiesta, so that means your final essay will be due on Monday, 1st, or Tuesday, 4th. Work diligently on these essays, and have some fun! Thursday, October 1 30 minutes of read time individually. Students read through Canto 20 and update their notes. Whatever is not finished is to be done for homework. In groups of two or three, students look at handout of Hero’s Journey and briefly relate to Dante in his heroic journey. Students discuss this in groups for about 20 minutes, generating a list of heroes who fit this journey. Each student turns in a list of at least ten heroes who fit this journey. In groups, students classify parts/aspects of Valley High School to Dante’s Inferno. For example, our counselors are similar to Virgil, as in they lead us in our schedules and goals. Have each group generate a list of at least 15, and each student turns in his own list for points. Please collect and place in the basket. Whatever is not completed will be done as homework, but I am hoping they finish. Wednesday, September 30 Headline writing Read through Canto and update your notes Discuss the heroic journey HW: Using what you know of Dante's Inferno, VHS and the heroic journey, talk about how VHS relates to the Inferno. Rubric includes: a double title, multi-paragraph with strong intro, wimpy conclusion and lots in between, W/C, QI, and one other aspect that you choose to be your focus. Perhaps you had a few comma splices in your last essay, so hone into correcting that problem, or another. Avoid 1st person point of view. Due in 7 days.
