Why does my child have to take Physical Education in high school?

New York State Education Law decrees that students must take Physical
Education at the secondary level every semester.

To graduate from Arlington High School, all students in grades 9-12 must
complete two full credits of Physical Education.

One quarter of a credit is given for each semester the course is completed
with a passing grade. Therefore, the student earns two credits by the end of
his/her fourth year.

Can an injured/ill student be medically excused from participating in class?

An ill/injured student can be medically excused for one or two days by
bringing a note from the parent to the nurse/physical education teacher.
Students who have medical conditions beyond one or two days must submit a
medical note and/or an activity restriction form completed and signed by the
physician so the teacher can give the student an alternate activity to earn
credit for Physical Education Class. State Education Law requires teachers to
provide activity modifications for any student who has a medical restriction.

If a student has a medical excuse, does the work missed have to be made up?

Yes, any time a student misses class, the student must do a make up activity

Can a student complete written work in lieu of active participation?

A student can do written work in place of an activity only if the student
has submitted a medical restriction form from a medical doctor which states
that the student may do nothing other than written assignments due to the
nature of the medical problem. This written work will only be given for
prolonged medical conditions lasting longer than 3 weeks. Students who have
short term medical conditions of less than 3 weeks will be expected to come
to Mrs. Moore's make up class which is held either before or after school.

Is there a time limit for the completion of make up work.

In general, make up work has to be completed by the time the quarter is
over. However,if a student has failed a class, he/she has 5 weeks into the
new quarter to make-up the work to have the grade changed for the first or
third quarter. At the end of the semester, however, there is no additional
time allowed.

Any time limits for written make-up work is at the discretion
of the teacher who assigned the work, but again, it must be completed and
submitted before the end of the semester. Be sure to ask your teacher about
time constraints and turn in the work according to those time constraints.
Work submitted late will not be accepted.
