From the Health Office 7th Grade Physicals – All 7th graders are required to have a physical as per NYS law. If your child has had a physical by their private physician, please provide a copy of the physical to the health office by October 1. If a private physical has already been scheduled for the near future, please call the health office and advise the nurse of the date of the physical. If your child received a sports physical by the school physician last spring, that physical will count as a 7th grade physical. School physicals will be given free of charge by the school physician to those students who have not provided a copy of their private physical to the nurse or who has not had a recent sports physical. These physicals will be given starting in October. Sports Physicals – Any 7th or 8th grade student who wishes to participate in an interscholastic sport is required to have their initial sports physical with the school physician. Private physicals are not accepted as per Arlington Central School District policy. The school physician comes to Arlington Middle School every other Wednesday morning during most of the school year, and a sports physical can be obtained at that time. Our next physicals will be scheduled for the beginning of October. To sign up for a sports physical, the student should see the nurse and obtain a “Health History Form,” which needs to be filled out by the parent and returned directly to the Health Office immediately. Once the student hands the form back to the nurse, the student will be put on the list for the next available physical. Sports physicals are given on a first come, first serve basis. Winter sport tryouts will begin mid November, so any student who has not had a sports physical and wishes to try out for a winter sport should see the nurse in the near future. All information regarding sports and sports physicals is given during the morning announcements. Please remind your children to pay attention to these important daily announcements. It is also available on the AMS Website on the Daily Bulletin. For the 6th grade students, we encourage all students to sign up for a sports physical in the spring, since many fall sports begin as soon as school starts, and if they haven’t already had a physical, they may miss tryouts. The school nurse and the physical education teachers will speak to all 6th graders about sports physicals in the spring, and forms will be handed out to them at that time. The sports physical forms are available today in the main office for any 7th or 8th grade student who has not yet had a sports physical and may be interested in participating in a sport this year. Medications – Just a reminder that according to NYS Education Law, students are not permitted to carry any medications on the bus or in school, with the only exceptions being “Self-Carry Inhalers” or “Self-Carry Epi-Pens” for which there must be a Self-Carry Order on file in the health office. A written doctor’s order and parent permission must be on file in the health office for any medication that a student may require during the day, including over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol or Advil. A new order must be obtained at the beginning of each school year. All medication must be transported to school by the parent and must be kept in the health office. Sick Students – A reminder that children who have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea should be kept home from school until they are free from the symptoms for 24 hours. Students who are under a doctor’s care and are being treated with antibiotics or eye drops need to receive medication for 24 hours before returning to school. Any child who gets sick during the school day must go to the heath office. Parents will be called by the nurse if the child needs to picked up. Students should not call to be picked up from a cell phone or from other offices. Parents also must remember that if their child needs to be picked up from the school for any reason, the person picking up the child must be listed on the emergency card and must present a picture ID. Parents also need to present picture ID when picking up their children. This is for the safety of all of our students.
