FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of
students and parents.
  1. What will students need for class?
  2. What projects will the students be working on?
  3. My child is not a good artist. Will he/she fail Art?

What will students need for class?

We provide 95% of the materials needed for class. We ask that students bring
pencils and a sharpener to save time distributing materials. The sketchbook
will act as a notebook for quiz material, as well as an area to sketch ideas
and do extra credit outside of class. We have found that the spiral bound
books are better quality and hold up much better than the glue bound books.

Supply list:

8x12 spiral bound sketch book
Folder
Pencils
Erasers
pencil sharpener

What projects will the students be working on?

Our curriculum is very flexible and I try to keep it open for changes as the
creative spirit hits us. Students may also bring ideas. I am always looking
for new and exciting projects.

I try to give the students some experience in the following areas: Drawing,
painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, collage, and mixed media.

We use a variety of materials in each area. For example, in drawing; Pencils,
charcoal, markers, and ink. With painting; Watercolor, tempera, acrylic, etc.

I try to teach them the skills and techniques necessary to create landscapes,
portraits, pottery, holiday cards, and sculptures.

All of our projects have a strong emphasis on creativity and self expression.

My child is not a good artist. Will he/she fail Art?

No. Not if they give their best effort and follow directions. First of all, I
love childrens artwork. It should not look like Michelangelo or stuff you
see at the mall. Student work is usually more interesting to me,
(especially than the mall stuff). Second, Art skills can be taught and
practiced like anything else. Once this is done, their artwork will
definitely improve. If the student demonstrates an understanding of the
concepts being taught and have shown a genuine effort to use the skills, their
project grades will be very good. The grade is also based on vocabulary
quizzes and participation. I do not want to discourage anyone from art. If
they are trying, they will get good grades.
