Second Grade Piano Unit
We have begun playing the piano each class. This will last until Christmas
and we will probably play 8 or 10 songs. Some children purchased a book for
their piano at home and they can continue in their book which has some harder
tunes as well.
We are learning the proper way to hold our hands and play. It's like holding
a cup; the fingers are rounded. And right now we are calling the fingers
1,2,3,4 and 5. When we "observe" the new song of the day in class, we are
saying these numbers to help us practice the piece. We also hold up our hands
and play these fingers before we go to the pianos.
We have centers in piano class. Every class, two of the groups will start at
the piano and the other two will write their music papers. After about 10
minutes we rotate. At the end of class we can finish up the papers and chat
about the class work for a bit before we leave.
We have also learned that the piano or keyboard is not a toy. We treat it
very gently, never banging or goofing around. It is a wonderful important
instrument and lots of fun.
