| Summer suggestions
Happy summer!
Parents often ask for things to do over the summer. Here are some ideas.
Take your child to the library and let him/her select his own books. If your
child consistently picks books that are too hard for independent reading,
gently guide her to the “easy reader” section.
Read together!
Read chapter books together, one chapter at a time. Discuss the story. Your
child will gain comprehension skills from carrying the story in his head from
day to day. Remember to talk about what happened yesterday before beginning
to read the next chapter.
Here are a list of excellent web sites to use for fun and review during the
summer. These are meant to be used by adults and kids together. Some
include materials that can be printed. One site requires a subscription.
Book lists by grade level and/or reading level can be found on many web
sites. Just Google “guided reading” and “leveled books” to get some ideas.
Happy reading!
