Chapter 13
• As a female, the crew claims Charlotte is “useless” as a deck hand.
• Charlotte is asked to climb to the top of the royal yard (highest
mast).
• Charlotte’s legs get tangled in the ratlines on her way down. She
loses her grip and falls.
• She makes it down safely only to find Captain Jaggery waiting for her
on the deck.
Chapter 14
• Jaggery reminds Charlotte that her father would not approve of her
actions.
• Charlotte begins her intense apprenticeship as a crewmember.
• Charlotte “shirked no work”, is called “Charlotte” (not Miss Doyle),
and must sleep in the forecastle with the men.
• Charlotte feels free from the “prison she thought was her proper
place” (158-159).
• The Captain calls on Charlotte directly to entangle the flying jib
from the bowsprit.
• The Captain calls her Mister Doyle.
• The crew sees birds; Hurricane is approaching.
