English Class Expectations 2009-2010
Team 6
with
Miss Gari
Welcome!
Here is a list of information that will help you do well in English this
year. It includes your classroom responsibilities, expectations, and
information about the class.
HOW TO BE RESPECTFUL IN ENGLISH CLASS:
• Please raise your hand if you have a question, answer, or comment.
Please be quiet and listen when other students or I am speaking.
• Always use inside voices and only say things that are helpful and not
harmful to others.
Consequences of inappropriate behavior:
(1) You will be given a warning/asked to stop.
(2) You will be given a second warning.
(3) You will stay for lunch detention.
(4) There will be a phone call home.
(5) You will be written up (given a referral).
Note: I reserve the right to move seats at any time.
HOW TO BE ACCOUNTABLE IN ENGLISH CLASS:
• Class begins at the bell. Make sure to bring your notebook, folder,
and independent reading book to class everyday. Your independent reading book
must be approved by me and a parent or guardian.
• Please copy down your homework in your planner and begin the “Do Now”
at the start of class.
• You will have three hall passes per marking period. Any unused passes
at the end of each marking period will be put into a raffle for prizes.
• Students are expected to participate. Students are not expected to
know everything, but you are expected to give your best effort. I expect all
students to share ideas, input, and questions on a regular basis.
• If you are absent IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make up missed work.
Absenteeism is one of the leading causes of failing grades. Prior work can be
found in the file folder on my travel cart according to the day of the week.
You can also check my website to find out what you missed. If you have a
lesson, you must ask me the day before your lesson for permission/missed work.
Classroom Policies:
• Late homework is not accepted unless you were absent due to illness.
• Late projects/writing assignments lose ten points for every day they
are handed in late.
• The class agenda for each day, homework, projects, and writing
assignments are posted on my web page. Please save it on your computer as a
favorite.
• All tests must be signed by a parent/guardian regardless of the grade.
• Extra help sessions will be provided as needed by students. Please
see me at least one day in advance to make sure I am available. Extra help
will always be available prior to a major test.
Grading System:
Grading will follow a point system. At the end of each marking period, a
total of possible points will be calculated. The total points you receive
throughout the marking period will be divided by the total possible points to
find your grade. Typical point values are listed below:
• Tests 100 points each
• Writing Assignments 100 points each
• Projects 100 points each
• Quizzes 10-50 points each
• Homework 5-10 points each
• Journal questions 5 points each
• Classwork 10-50 points each
Goals:
• To expose ourselves and to gain appreciation for as much literature
as possible.
• To improve spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.
• To practice the writing process on various writing assignments.
• To create a classroom where everyone shares their thoughts
comfortably.
Supplies:
• Marble composition notebook
• Loose-leaf
• Plastic or durable folder
• Blue/Black ink pen or pencil
• Independent reading book
