I had the amazing opportunity to ride my bicycle across the country four summers ago (2007)
from Seattle, WA to Washington D.C. for the American Lung
Association! It took 48 days and we averaged about 85 miles/day. It was a
life-changing experience. The most important things I learned were the
importance of constantly challenging your mind and body - keeping active
physically and mentally, and the need to slow down and see the beauty that
surrounds you in everyday life.
The past four summers I have worked as an instructor for Ecology Camp at the Cary Institute of
Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY. This summer, I also taught at our district's "Camp Invention"
which was a lot of fun. I got some time off to ride my bike, do three VERY fun mud-runs, and go to
CrossFit regularly too.
When I am not sharing the world of biology with others, I like: to go hiking, to get stronger by doing
CrossFit, cycling, getting lost in a good book, taking photographs, building furniture, or even do
some quilting.
Here at school, I am an advisor for the Hiking Club, Snowshoe Club (sadly not having it this year
though), Recycling Club and Ski Club. I am also one of the head coaches for Spring Track and I will be
helping out with Volleyball this season too. If you have not visited my classrooms yet (204 and 202),
there are a few friendly critters awaiting a hello.
My door is always open if you need help or just want to share a story. You
just have to speak up!
To instill an appreciation for science and the world around you. To spark a
sense of wonder for the earth's diversity and hopefully have some fun while
doing it. To teach an appreciation and respect for all living things and to
learn to be responsible human members of our delicate environment.
