Teen Driving Night Information
Dear Parents:
If you now have, or soon will have, a teenage driver in your home, this announcement is sure to be of interest.
Every year, we hear of at least one horrific accident that takes the lives of teens and other young drivers because someone chose to drink and drive. We know that most of the alcohol-related fatalities occur between the ages of 16 – 21. Your child’s High School and the Council of Addiction Prevention and Education (CAPE) of Dutchess County have joined together in an effort to prevent these tragedies that needlessly take the lives of our children.
On the evening ofApril 30, A-L and on May 8, M-Z Arlington high school and the Council will host a special program for students and their families. The program, "Teen Driving – A Family Affair,"is mandatory for students who are applying for School Parking Permitsandalso for parents, who play such a crucial role in their teen’s safe driving . Please plan to arrive by 6:30 for registration, so that we can begin the program promptly at 7:00. To show respect for the speakers (all volunteers), no one will be admitted after 7:00pm.
There are four major components covered during this program. A victim of a drunk/drugged crash presents his/her personal story. This is a powerful testimonial that will reinforce any and all warnings that parents or the media has provided. The medical component is presented by a nurse or EMT who has had "first responder" experience on the scene. In addition, to provide parents with important information, we will have a representative from the District Attorney’s office to give the legal side of what can be expected if your child should make the destructive decision to drink/drug or text while driving. Finally, a representative from the Insurance Industry will be present to provide an overview of insurance implications involved in DWI cases.
If you want your child to be able to drive to school, and safety is an important issue for your family, you and your student driver need to attend this event. If you cannot attend the date scheduled, you may attend at another school. You will find the alternative dates attached to this letter. We ask that you please not bring any children under the age of 12 years old, as the material presented is not appropriate for them.
