o DRAFT   YOUR   PARAGRAPH. Your draft is due at the start of class Friday, 10/16/08.   It will count for homework credit.   (NOTE: This assignment is based on the homework from 10/15/08. See below.)

Here are some selections from the class lesson for today:

**Select a Topic**

Once you have generated your list of things you feel thankful for, narrow down your list.

•Choose the one thing for which you are most thankful to the Veterans of the United States.

•This will be the topic of your paragraph.

•Be sure it is something you can write a whole paragraph about.

**Be sure you can Support With Details**

•After you select your paragraph’s topic, you have to think of supporting details.

•Your topic should have at least three supporting details to go with it.

•The details should develop and expand on the topic.

•Stick to the point, and don’t wander

Draft a Paragraph- Step #1 –Make a thesis

•Thesis: a general statement of the main point of a piece of writing.  This is what your piece will prove.

Example:

–I am thankful to the veterans of the United States for their many sacrifices to protect and defend our people and way of life.

Tips:

–Clearly and simply state the topic of your piece.

–Be sure your thesis is something you can support with details and examples, or it won’t work

Draft a Paragraph- Step #2 Support and prove your thesis.

•Supporting Details: specific reasons and examples that expand and develop on the thesis.  These are what will prove your thesis.

Examples:

DETAIL#1  Your service to all of us means that you have to spend a lot of time away from family and friends.  I know that I miss my family if I don’t see them for a day.  It must be terrible to be away from your families for months at a time.

DETAIL#2  Throughout our nation’s history, servicemen had to endure harsh conditions to serve and defend our nation.  I get grumpy and miserable just waiting on the corner for my bus on a cold day.  I can hardly imagine the conditions that you had to bear for our sake.

DETAIL#3  I am inspired by your willingness to place yourself in harm’s way for our sake.  Your willing sacrifices for our nation’s sake have helped me to understand that there are things worth standing up for.

Tips:

–Be sure that the details support and develop the thesis.

–Stay on topic, and don’t wander.

Draft a Paragraph- Step #3  Wrap it up

•Clincher: wraps-up and closes the paragraph.  Often the clincher re-states the thesis in different terms or brings home the main point.

Example:

CLINCHER  I love the America that your sacrifices have made possible.  I know that the great way of life that we enjoy could not have come to be without the efforts of the many brave men and women who have served our nation throughout its history.  Thank you for safeguarding the legacy and defending our way of life.

Tips:

–Be sure that the clincher echoes or re-asserts the thesis.

–Finish with a strong image, statement, or final comment about that main idea.

That's about all. If that doesn't serve as a memory jogger, nothing will!

10/15/08

o Make a list of things that you love about America for which you are grateful to our nation's Veterans. Put it in your work section. Have at least five things. It will count for homework credit.

NOTE: To make extra credit on Test #3, signed papers must be returned by Friday, 10/17.
