Wednesday: Math Facts Quiz 3. Friday: Spelling Test 4. Friday Vocabulary Test 5. Friday: Writing Assignment due Writing Assignment of the Week TASK Write a “This I believe” essay. AUDIENCE Class & teacher PURPOSE Explain, narrate, persuade, describe This I Believe Essay-Writing Instructions (from http://thisibelieve.org/essaywritingtips.html) · Tell a story: Be specific. Take your belief out of the ether and ground it in the events of your life. Consider moments when belief was formed or tested or changed. Think of your own experience, work, and family, and tell of the things you know that no one else does. Your story need not be heart-warming or gut-wrenching—it can even be funny—but it should be real. Make sure your story ties to the essence of your daily life philosophy and the shaping of your beliefs. · Be brief: Your statement should be between 350 and 500 words. That's about three minutes when read aloud at your natural pace. · Name your belief: If you can't name it in a sentence or two, your essay might not be about belief. Also, rather than writing a list, consider focusing on one core belief, because three minutes is a very short time. · Be positive: Please avoid preaching or editorializing. Tell us what you do believe, not what you don't believe. Avoid speaking in the editorial "we." Make your essay about you; speak in the first person. · Be personal: Write in words and phrases that are comfortable for you to speak. We recommend you read your essay aloud to yourself several times, and each time edit it and simplify it until you find the words, tone, and story that truly echo your belief and the way you speak. Mr. Jeannotte’s Fifth Grade Class Homework Week of October 22, 2007 Monday, October 22nd (Due Tuesday) ¨ Read thirty minutes. Record your book and pages read in your reading journal. ¨ Math Sheet subtracting decimals / mixed operations Tuesday, October 23rd (Due Wednesday) ¨ Read thirty minutes. Record your book and pages read in your reading journal. ¨ Math Sheet subtracting decimals / mixed operations Wednesday, October 24th (Due Thursday) ¨ Read thirty minutes. Record your book and pages read in your reading journal. ¨ Math Sheet subtracting decimals / mixed operations No School Friday! Tests, Projects & Quizzes 1. Monday: Spelling Pre-test 2. Wednesday: Math Facts Quiz 3. Thursday: Writing Assignment due Writing Assignment of the Week October 22, 2007 TASK Make a case outline of your “This I believe” statement. Include your statement and the sequence of claims that support your statement. Finally, briefly describe evidence and warrant types. AUDIENCE Class and teacher PURPOSE Persuade, persuade, persuade, explain, describe, narrate · Use a standard outline format. · Be brief. Outlines are just the skeleton. · Use a variety of warrant types. Definitions A resolution is a statement that responds to a controversy. In the “Are girls smarter than boys?” controversy, there can be three possible resolutions to the argument: (1) Yes, girls are smarter. (2) No boys are smarter, (3) Both are equally smart. A case is the structure of arguments to support your resolution. Claims are a set of statements that build up the resolution. (The resolution is the “ultimate claim). Note that claims may be true or false. The more warranted your claims and the better the connections between claims, the better your case is. In this set of claims, there is a problem with logic. Can you find the error? (1) All monkeys have two eyes. (2) All monkeys have furry faces. (3) Mr. Shornstein has a fuzzy face. (Resolution) Mr. Shornstein must be a monkey. Evidence is a variety of types of support for claims. A warrant is the authorization to move from evidence to claim. The claim, “Mr. Jeannotte eats fish because he has bad breath” is unwarranted. Too many explanations for why Mr. Jeannotte has bad breath exist besides eating fish. The claim, “Mr Jeannotte has sardine breath. This empty can of sardines was on his desk, just now. Eating fish gives Mr. Jeannotte bad breath.” is warranted because cause and effect has been established (eat fish = smell like fish) and fish breath is commonly accepted as bad breath. Among Inuit, the commonplace that fish breath is bad would not hold. Warrant types: Logic: Proof based on relationships of statements. If all girls do homework, and Mary is a girl, then Mary does homework. If no girls do homework and Mary is a girl, then Mary doesn’t do homework. Note: The two first statements must be true for the argument to be right, but the logic is correct whether the statements are true or not. Analogy: A comparison of similar traits. Since they are similar, they likely behave similarly too. Mr. Jeannotte looks just like my Uncle Buck. Uncle Buck eats like a pig. Mr. Jeannotte must eat like a pig.
Cause & Effect: One thing causes the other thing (the effect) to occur. Their relationship is predictable. You threw the brick at the window. The window broke. The fact that you threw the brick caused the window to break. It wasn’t aan earthquake or any other reason. If you hadn’t thrown the brick, the glass wouldn’t be broken now. Correlation: The amount two things are related. When Mr. Jeannotte is in a good mood, the room is usually neat. It may be that Mr. J cleans when he is happy. It may be that neatness makes him happy. It could be that the person who cleans also tells funny jokes. The things – happiness and neatness are related, but the cause and effect is not clear. Generalization: When from something specific, a more general claim is made. Girls’ hair is often longer than boys’ hair. If I see someone from the back who has long hair, I assume it is a girl. Even though hair length is only one indicator. Social Knowledge or Commonplace: Something accepted by a society or culture as true. Fish breath and body odor are socially inappropriate. (This would not be social knowledge in some parts of the world). Mr. Jeannotte’s Fifth Grade Class Homework Week of October 29, 2007 Monday, October 29th (Due Tuesday) ¨ Read thirty minutes.
