February 8, 2010 Encourage Responsibility -
Parents want their children to be "responsible." But what does this really mean? A responsible person is respectful, honest, courageous and in control. Here are som ways to encourage these traits in your child: RESPECTFULNESS: Kids need to be concerned about themselves and others. Help your child consider feelings. For example, "How could that decision make your friend feel? "How would it make you feel about yourself?" HONESTY: although being truthful is sometimes hard, it feels worse to deceive. Talk with you child about how honesty leads to trust. Set a good example by admitting mistakes. Make it a family habit to apologize, learn from things, and move on. COURAGE: Standing up for beliefs can be scary. Prepare your child by role playing tough situations. Explain that it's normal to feel intimidated. Encourag them to make good decisions despite fears. That's a real sign of bravery. SELF-CONTROL: Life is full of temptations. Kids benefit when they are patient and calm. If your children are angry about something, for example, help them weigh the pros and cons of possible reactions.
